Coinciding with the second edition of Frieze Seoul, CIRCA ART has collaborated with South Korean artist Koo Jeong A on custom 3D animations that are currently broadcasting across four screens in the Gangnam District each evening at 08:23 until 30 September 2023.
The interactive graphics run for three minutes daily, where a QR code will prompt onlookers to submit their own Smell Stories — a series of questions: such as age, occupation, description of the scent and the city in which it originated from. Each entry will help inspire a new fragrance that will serve as a fragrance map, which will be unveiled at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, where Koo Jeong A will present Odorama Cities at the national Korean Pavilion.
“Koo’s work emphasizes a poetic mundaneness that seduces the viewer to look closer,” said CIRCA founder, Josef O’Connor. Odorama Cities captures this contemplation on human perception through both the archiving and creation of scent. In celebration of her upcoming commission at the 60th Venice Art Biennale, CIRCA is honored to collaborate in extending this invitation to the Korean public to contribute towards the creation of this new fragrance.”
Curated by Jacob Fabricius and Seolhui Lee, the Korean Pavilion at next year’s Venice Biennale will be an immersive scent journey that features smells representing different rural areas, towns, and cities in South and North Korea.
