Phoenix Suns star playmaker and NBA veteran Chris Paul continues to cement himself as one of the greats. In the most recent matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers, Paul becomes the third person ins the history of the NBA to reach 11,000 or more assists.
Late Sunday night, the Phoenix Suns beat the Clippers 112-95 with the help of Devin Booker‘s 35 points. Paul assisted on the Suns’ first basket of the game, Booker’s three-pointer. His 11,000th assist was followed by an alley-oop pass to Deandre Ayton, who dunked the ball. In a post-game interview, Paul admitted that he had no idea, “I honestly didn’t have a clue until I checked out of the game.”
Only two other players, John Stockton and Jason Kidd, have reached this milestone number of assists. Paul has also become the first player in the NBA to reach 20,000 points and 11,000 assists. His coach Monty Williams commended Paul, “It’s amazing. I look at him and I’m like, holy smokes, I get to coach Chris Paul.” In their careers, Stockton had a total of 15,806 assists and Kidd had 12,091. It remains to be seen if Paul will eclipse either of the two NBA greats. He finished the game with seven points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.
