Check Out This $80,000 USD Consumer Supercomputer

During CES 2023, technology insider YouTube Channel Linus Tech Tips stopped by the booth for California-based information technology company Supermicro. Linus Tech Tips took a look at Supermicro’s “GPU SuperServer SYS-740GP-TNRT,” an AI-assisted workstation designed for home use.

Priced at $80,000 USD, the 4U rackmountable tower dual processor (3rd Gen Intel® Xeon®) workstation with four PCIe GPUs represents the upcoming shift towards supercomputing. Although we are still years away from the widespread necessity of supercomputers as a working standard, recent interest and developments note the growing importance of AI in the advancement of civilization as we know it. Supermicro’s GPU SuperServer SYS-740GP-TNRT is purposefully designed for AI/deep learning training, high-performance computing, scientific virtualization, and rendering.

Despite requiring a massive amount of power to run (dual 2200W redundant titanium-level power supplies), the relatively compact workstation is quiet enough to be used in an office setting thanks to its water-cooling. The GPU SuperServer SYS-740GP-TNRT features the Intel Xeon Platinum 8480 CPU with 256 core processors and four PCIe NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs and 16 DIMM Slots for up to 4TB DRAM.

An $80,000 USD supercomputer to have at home may seem overkill, but Supermicro notes that the GPU SuperServer SYS-740GP-TNRT is one of their most requested products by companies for employees still working from home. Head over to Supermicro’s website to learn more about the model and get a glance into the future of supercomputing.
