During the Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike semifinal match at Evolution Championship Series 2004 (August 1, 2004), Daigo Umehara pulled off a stunning victory against Justin Wong that is now known as “Evo Moment #37”, or the “Daigo Parry.” During the match, Daigo, playing Ken, unexpectedly parried 15 consecutive hits of Wong’s Chun-Li “Super Art” move with just one pixel of health left. The Japanese pro then delivered a final max damage combo that won him the match, but the moment at Evo 2004 is still considered one of the most iconic moments in competitive video gaming.
Earlier this week, Jwong was forced to relive the dramatic comeback again, nearly 18 years later. During a Twitch stream, the American professional gamer faced off again Capge, a relatively unknown talented Japanese player, in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. Going back a forth in a series of rounds with the familiar Chun-Li vs. Ken match-up, Capge showed shades of Daigo pulling off the same parry victory sequence seen at Evo 2004.
Sharing his initial disbelief, Jwong said, “You think you Daigo? You ain’t Daigo.” But as the parries started to arrive, Jwong started saying, “Oh, he Daigo! He Daigo,” before losing the round and sharing his shock, “That’s crazy, bro. I can’t believe it.”
