Celine Dion returns to stage at Olympics opening ceremony to perform "L'Hymne à l'amour"

Celine Dion made her grand return to the stage during the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony in Paris, performing a stirring rendition of Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour.” Watch it below.

Taking place after the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, the performance marked a huge milestone for Dion, who had vowed to return to the stage amid her ongoing battle with stiff-person syndrome. The pop icon recently released a documentary on the subject, titled I Am: Celine Dion.

Earlier in the ceremony, Lady Gaga was the first artist to take the stage, delivering a show-stopping performance of the 1960s cabaret song “Mon truc en plumes” in French.

Following the performance, Gaga shared a social media statement saying she felt “humbled” by the opportunity to “honor the French people and their tremendous history of art, music, and theatre.”

Gaga added, “Although I am not a French artist, I have always felt a very special connection with French people and singing French music — I wanted nothing more than to create a performance that would warm the heart of France, celebrate French art and music, and on such a momentous occasion remind everyone of one of the most magical cities on earth — Paris.”

On the horizon, Lady Gaga will be returning to the big screen for Joker: Folie à Deux, the musical sequel to the 2019 film Joker. Watch the trailer, which teases more musical performances from Gaga, here.
