Cecily Strong, Kristen Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit & More Set For Apple Musical Comedy Series

Apple has set a star-studded cast for a musical comedy series starring Saturday Night Live regular Cecily Strong.

The untitled show (formerly known as Schmigadoon) comes from writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, executive producer Lorne Michaels and Universal Television. The cast alongside Strong will include Keegan-Michael Key, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, Kristen Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski and Ann Harada.

The series follows a couple (Strong and Key) on a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship when they discover a magical town in which everyone acts as if they’re in a musical from the 1940s. They then discover that they can’t leave until they find “true love.” It’s scheduled to premiere in 2021.

Key’s Josh is Melissa’s (Strong) long-term, pragmatic partner and the last person who wants to be stuck in the magical town. The rest of the cast will play residents of the town, with Cumming as its mayor; Armisen as a minister and Chenoweth as his morally superior wife; Tveit as the town bad boy who sets his sights on Melissa; Cameron as a farmer’s daughter who falls for Josh; DeBose as a teacher who struggles to fit in; Camil as the icy-hearted town doctor; Krakowski as a woman determined to marry Camil’s character; and Harada as the mayor’s dutiful, oblivious wife.

Paul and Daurio (the Despicable Me franchise) created the series. Paul will serve as showrunner, write original music for the series, and executive produce with Broadway Video’s Michaels and Andrew Singer. Barry Sonnenfeld is set to direct. Strong will be a producer, as will Caroline Maroney, Micah Frank and Rose Lam. Daurio is a consulting producer.

Key is repped by UTA, Viewpoint and Brecheen Feldman. Cumming is repped by ICM Partners and Untitled Entertainment. Armisen is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Jared Levine. Chenoweth is repped by Schreck Rose, 3 Arts Entertainment and ICM Partners. Tveit is represented by CAA, Elin Flack Management and Wolf Kasteler. Cameron is represented by A3 Artists Agency, LBI Entertainment and Felker Toczek. DeBose is represented by Anthony Calamita of AC Management, Ryan LeVine & Kimberly Jaime of Jackoway Austen and CAA. Camil is represented by Zero Gravity and Jackoway Austen. Harada is repped by Artists and Representatives.
