What Is Hill-Descent Control? How This “Downhill Cruise Control” Works

Imagine yourself perched atop a steep, snowy hill. If you’re rocking snow pants and a parka, and there’s a sled beneath your snow-insulated cheeks, you want to slide down that slope with as much speed and as little friction as possible. It’ll be fun! As fun as that might be, if you find yourself atop a hill in an SUV packed with three rows of beloved family members, you’ll likely have a different goal in mind. A slow, safe, controlled descent is what we’re after, which can be rather tricky and unnerving to accomplish with brake-pedal modulation alone. Hence, hill-descent control. How Does Hill-Descent Control Work? Land Rover introduced hill-descent control on the compact first-gen Freelander, which reached American dealers in late 2002. The Freelander didn...

The Holiday Packing List Every Fashion Girl Should Check Before Travelling

Back in June, when we’d had three months of lockdown, it felt like the prospect of a holiday was completely out of the question. Now, however, deep into July and almost August, it’s a different situation entirely. Plenty of people are jetting off. Of course, that might not be the case for everyone right now, so it’s worth noting that just because many have decided to go away, it’s okay if you’re not. But if you have managed to wrangle that plane ticket and are about to go to warmer climes, then allow us to be the fashion guidebook on what to pack for your holiday.  Putting together a sunny holiday packing list might sound tiresome, but for a stress-free vacay, especially when you need to travel with your own mask and hand sanitiser right no...

The Autumn Knitwear Trend I’m Wearing Now

My obsession with the collared knit was reignited when I spotted Shrimps’ adorable crystal-button statement-collar cardigan on Matches, and it instantly sparked a search for alternatives, both on the high street and second-hand. There is plenty to choose from, whether you’re wanting a preppier sweater, cosy cardigan, crocheted number or something with shorter sleeves.  We’ll be wearing ours now tucked into straight-leg jeans and accessorised with a chunky chain necklace. Then come autumn, we’ll be adding it to leather trousers with a blazer thrown over the top. Now that’s what we call versatile. Scroll down to see and shop the collared-jumper styles that are on our minds right now. Happy browsing!  You Deserve to Make Money E...

41 Looks That Prove Balayage Is Still the Chicest Hair Trend Out There

The result was everything I’d hoped for. Subtle hints of blonde shone through the lengths, blending seamlessly into my natural colour at the roots. A couple of years later, and it seemed this new hair colour trend had a name: balayage. While for decades, hair-colouring techniques in the UK had been based solely around a strict menu of block colour, full-head highlights, half-head highlights or T-section highlights, leading UK hairstylists were starting to adopt more tailored, international techniques, and balayage was the first big movement. Since that moment, I’ve more or less stuck to my balayage roots (pun totally intended) and only really switched up my colour to experiment with other forms of balayage. And in all honesty, I’m not sure I’ll ever look back. When it comes to going to the...

Mercedes-Benz’s New T-Class Is a Compact Euro Van to a “T”

Mercedes-Benz Vans will introduce a new, smaller van aimed at private owners sometime soon. It’ll partially replace the current Citan, which is really a rebadged Renault Kangoo—very similar to the Ram ProMaster City or Ford Transit Connect we get on this side of the pond. These compact vanlets are quite popular overseas with business owners and families (or business owners with families). And many are the product of joint ventures, just like the Citan. There’s a new Kangoo on the horizon, so the timing of the T-Class announcement isn’t too surprising. It’ll carry on as a product of this partnership. And it’ll compliment the V-Class (known here as the Metris), slotting below it as a main pillar in the van division’s offerings to non-commercial buyers. Mor...

The Story of the Big, Four-Door Bronco That Presaged the Expedition

For years, the Ford Bronco was essentially the same vehicle: a stubby SUV with a removable roof. The early Broncos were smaller, and the rest (those without “II” in their names) adopted shortened full-size truck underpinnings, but the formula was otherwise basically recognizable. But even Ford was considering what a larger Bronco might look like before a fuel crisis scared them straight, though it took an aftermarket conversion by Centurion Vehicles to bring the four-door Bronco into reality. See all 5 photos Not that Centurion called it a Bronco. Instead, it was the “Centurion Classic,” built off a crew-cab version of the F-150 or F-350. The rear quarters and roof were sourced from a contemporary Bronco. The Michigan-based outfit built these conversions for ye...

These Chic Hand Soaps Will Make Your Bathroom Feel Like a Boutique Hotel

However, while much of my collection comes from market stalls and independent shops that are difficult to trace back, my love of soaps has turned into a personal mission to uncover the best soaps out there. Along with candles, fancy hand soaps have become a default whenever I fancy treating myself to something I wouldn’t ordinarily buy, which I then use on rotation depending on the time of year, or a particular scent I’m pining for. Friends and family have also commented that they anticipate seeing which soap – be it a liquid or a bar – I’ll have sitting on my sink when they next visit. Over time, I’ve tried just about every soap out there and, of course, I have my favourites. So, whether you’re a fellow soap aficionado or you simply want to elevate your bathroom, scroll below to see the b...

5 New Brands That Have Caught My Attention This Summer

As a Fashion Editor, it is often a prerequisite of the job to keep informed of new brand launches and up-and-coming buzzy labels, though with such a saturated market, it can feel like an information overload. With an inbox full of press releases and new brands popping up on Instagram everyday, there’s is hardly enough time to keep up with it all, which is why when you discover a brand the cuts through the noise,  you know they’re destined for great things.  This summer, I’ve had that experience with few times, finding new brands that have really managed to capture my attention. From newly launched swim labels with inclusivity at their core to sustainably-minded ready-to-wear brands that don’t compromise on style, there is so much talent...

Summer 2020’s Take On The Check Shirt Is A Fashion Favourite

While for some the thought of a check shirt might conjure up images of a well-dressed dad at a barbeque or memories of a childhood school uniform, this season the item has had a decidedly stylish makeover. And although the anecdotal evidence of this is clear—several influencers have been seen embracing the button-down—there’s also data to prove the theory.  According to fashion search engine Lyst, check shirts have seen a 38% increase in searches over the last few weeks, with styles by ASOS and Jacquemus amongst the most viewed. And although Jacquemus’ S/S20 yellow shirt was a guaranteed winner on the runway, seen on Instagram feeds worldwide after it’s debut in a lavender field in Provence, I personally feel like a different check ...

This Trending Dress Is the Comfiest Thing You’ll Wear All Summer

It’s basically a more grown-up alternative to smock dresses, which have been trending this year. Perfect for this weekend’s heatwave, these dresses are loose yet elegant, clean-lined yet cool. You can dress them up with chunky jewellery and heeled sandals and dress them down with sliders and sunnies. I also think they would look fab with a cinching belt if you’re craving a bit more shape from your look.  At the top of my wish list is Arket’s terracotta-coloured striped midi, which was made for lazy summer afternoons. I also love COS’s silken style, with its delicate lace-up detailing. Best of all? This is surely one of the comfiest dresses you can buy right now, which is ideal if you’re working from home (just sayi...

With a Name Like Beast MODE 4×4, This Mercedes Camper Van Means Business

If you’re looking for a go-anywhere van to transform into a mobile cabin, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4×4 is a great choice. It’s one of the most popular #vanlife choices around, with factory four-wheel drive and a number of body and wheelbase configurations. It’s basically a blank slate—something we have highlighted over and over. Some upfitters build relatively affordable Sprinter-based overland rigs and RVs, others pull out all the stops. The overall variety of Sprinter options is overwhelming. Add Storyteller to your list of Sprinter upfitters, near the top, preferably—because their MODE 4×4 series looks the business. The company has been in the upfitting business for a long time, its founder Jeffrey Hunter tells us, but only recently have they gotten into th...
