Mecum’s Upcoming Muscle Car City Museum Auction Features Rare Chevrolet Chevelle Z16

ZL1, COPO, L88, SS, RS, Z/28, Z06—without context, Chevy’s mid-century order codes are about as evocative as reading the back of a once-a-day vitamin bottle. Unsurprisingly, the docket of Mecum Auction’s upcoming sale of Rick Treworgy’s sprawling Muscle Car City is loaded to the air cleaners with these alphanumeric codes, and while it’s tempting to fixate on the incredible COPO Camaros and SS variants filling up the show floor of the former grocery store, we can’t tear our eyes from the rare and semi-obscure 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle Z16 that’s up for grabs. See all 7 photos As demand for high-performance muscle car variants rose in the mid-1960s, Chevrolet realized the relatively staid Chevelle was at risk of falling behind its contemporaries as the big-b...

Renault’s R5 Concept EV Is How You Say ‘Back to the Future’ in French

The iconic Renault 5 hatchback is getting rebooted as a sexy EV, informed by the iconic little Cinq of the past, but not necessarily beholden to it. In fact, you can say that about Renault in general, because this R5 Concept EV was revealed as part of a larger push to reinvent the French company for the 2020s and beyond that the company is calling Nouvelle Vague—New Wave. Renault as a services company, as a tech company, et cetera. Oh, and they’re still going to build cars—and if they’re anything like this R5 concept, that’s great news for those that can buy them. See all 12 photos The company is promising seven fully-electric vehicles—half its projected lineup—to be full EVs by 2025. The company already sells a range of EVs, from the tiny and bizarre Twizy to the Master ...

The Surprising Performance Potential of Volvo Engine Swaps

Many fans of Swedish metal are eager to turn others onto the potential for Volvo performance. There are a surprising array of engine options and platforms that can make for the perfect oddball project. We’ve gathered some ideas to inspire you to consider a Volvo project car. Uncommon Performance: 1974-1993 Volvo 240 The humble Volvo 244 (sedan), 242 (coupe) and 245 (wagon) enjoyed nearly three decades of faithful service as the go-to car of choice for college professors, safety-conscious families, and free thinkers looking to escape Detroit’s grasp in an era when European imports were still a mixed bag when it came to quality and reliability. Collectively known as the Volvo 240, the line-up’s stodgy, squared-off styling concealed an overbuilt design that still ensures a s...

Nissan NV350 Office Pod Concept: Let’s Never Return to the Office, Ever

Like most of the population, we’re wondering when we can return to our offices—or at least we were until we saw Nissan’s NV350 Caravan Office Pod Concept, one of several concept cars Nissan is showing at the virtual 2021 Tokyo Auto Salon. The NV350 Office Pod turns work-from-home into work-from-wherever, and we’ve decided that we desperately, desperately need a fleet of them, if only to distance ourselves from our own families (we kid … mostly). Based on the Nissan NV350 van, the NV350 Caravan Office Pod Concept features an office with a computer desk and what appears to be a delightfully overcomplicated office chair. The office pod fits neatly into the back of the Caravan, but should you choose to take your workspace-on-wheels to a more picturesque spot, the pod sl...

Leaked! Production 2022 Nissan Z Spills the Tea in Patent Images

Thanks to a set of patent images that were found lurking around an Australian patent site, we now have a pretty good idea of what the production car will look like. Design number 202015053, as it’s referred to on the site, is most definitely the saleable version of the car we expect Nissan to sell as the 2022 400Z. For lovers of retro-modern design, the news is good. Even though it very closely resembles the Z Proto, there are key indicators that this is the production version of the car. The radar sensor for systems such as adaptive cruise control (something the Z Proto didn’t have) is clearly visible in the lower part of the front intake. Additionally, the headlights are shaped slightly differently, there are emergency keyholes in the doors and in the rear liftgate in the eve...

Muscle Car City of Ruins: Rick Treworgy’s Classic GM Collection Heads to Auction

What’s better than being the mayor of Flavortown? How about being the proprietor of a larger city. Move over Guy Fieri, because Rick Treworgy lords over the land that is Muscle Car City. Or at least he will until Muscle Car City closes its doors for good on January 17, 2021. See all 194 photos You see, Muscle Car City is a municipality in name only. In actuality, it’s a museum that contains Treworgy’s massive car collection. We’re talking hundreds of cars. Enough to fill up almost an entire Walmart. Literally.  Before it became a haven for Treworgy’s collector cars, Muscle Car City was an actual Walmart in Punta Gorda, Florida. The building will return to its roots as primarily a place of commerce from January 22-23, when Mecum begins auctioning off the a...

Classic 1971 Range Rover SUV Is Made Even Better By Way Of Less Roof

Planning on commissioning an over-restored restomod Land Rover Defender, Ford Bronco, or FJ40 soft-top? How creative. Take our word for it (with the Jeep Wrangler’s production lines at full capacity and the new Bronco approaching at terminal velocity), your six-figure candy-painted agrarian box won’t stand out from the square-sided 4×4 drop-top crowd, not to mention the thousands of LS-swapped beach blitzers already crawling over sandy locales such as Malibu and Miami like ants on a spilled puddle of mango-flavored White Claw. Think outside the box, please. For optimal drop-top four-wheel-drive fun, we suggest dusting off the bidding paddles for the 1971 Range Rover “Suffix A” Convertible crossing the block at RM Sotheby’s upcoming Arizona sale later...

The Hoff’s Personal KITT Is Up for Auction, and It Ain’t Cheap

You’re looking at David Hasselhoff‘s personal KITT, a highly modified Pontiac Firebird Trans Am given the full Knight Rider treatment. While this isn’t one of the vehicles used in the show, of which few survived, it appears to be an exacting replica of the hero car of the early ’80s drama. And while you’d expect something like this, personally owned by the show’s lead actor, to go for big bucks, you might be shocked about how big. At the time of this writing, with 10 days left on the auction, bidding is up to $475,000. See all 7 photos This isn’t the first KITT that Hasselhoff has owned or sold, either. Last year, he told erstwhile Top Gear host Chris Evans, on his radio show, that he’d sold a similar replica to a man in Turkey (the sale...

2020 Lamborghini Huracán Evo RWD Coupe and Spyder First Drive: Fun Redefined

Lamborghini Huracan Full Overview “Had this been a typical Lamborghini press drive, I’d be writing this 2020 Lamborghini Huracán Evo RWD review after blasting around a far-flung racetrack,” road test editor Chris Walton wrote in our Huracán Evo RWD First Drive a few months ago. Instead, thanks to 2020, he spent his time piloting the new “entry-level” Lamborghini alone around some of Southern California’s finest driving roads. Not long after his drive, however, Lamborghini offered us the chance to drive the new Huracán Evo RWD at “The Fastest Road in the West,” on Willow Springs International Raceway’s famous Big Willow circuit. As an added bonus, I also had a brief opportunity to sample the new 2020 Lamborghini Huracán Evo RWD Spyder on...

Want To Drive a Ford Bronco Sport Before Your Friends? Rent One on Turo

The only problem is a test drive at your local dealership usually isn’t long enough to get a real feel for what the Bronco Sport—or any car, for that matter—can really do. Luckily Turo, the app-based car sharing service, seems to the perfect solution to this particular problem. If you aren’t familiar with Turo, here’s a quick rundown. It’s like any rental car service: You put in your location, for how long you’ll need the car, and what kind of car you want. But because owners are renting their cars directly to you, the catalogue of cars available is much, much deeper than anything you’ll find at your local Hertz. There’s at least one Bronco Sport already available for rent in San Francisco: an Outer Banks-trimmed car painted in Area 51 gray. P...

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 EV Takes Form as a High-Design Hatchback

After initially teasing the new, fully electric Ioniq 5 crossover/hatchback a little too tantalizingly—by showing essentially nothing at all—Hyundai is back and ready to give us all a better peek at the new EV. In fact, Hyundai is serving up three glimpses of its first-ever dedicated electric SUV in the buff: There’s a shot of the front end, a photo of the rear, and a closeup of the front wheel and fender. See all 17 photos If the name “BMW” leapt into your brain while scanning the Ioniq 5 photos, you aren’t alone. The hooded quad LED headlight accents and well-defined hood bulge suggest some design inspiration from Bavaria. The resemblance fades the further aft one’s eye moves down the Ioniq 5’s body; by the time your gaze makes it to the rear doors and...

TruckHouse BCT’s 2021 Toyota Tacoma Is One Luxurious Overlanding Rig

We at MotorTrend love big adventure rigs. After all, these vehicles subscribe to such a wonderful automotive recipe. Take something ostensibly ordinary (a 2021 Toyota Tacoma) and garnish it with something extraordinary (a miniaturized house). Cue the TruckHouse BCT: a made to order, carbon-fiber-clad, go anywhere, do anything home away from home. The whole thing is made to order, and comes in various different “stages.” Stage One is available on either the base TRD Access Cab or the TRD Sport. TruckHouse then adds 33-inch tires, long-travel suspension, a custom fabricated rear axle, a new rear bumper, and what the company calls a “reinforced chassis.” Stage Two has everything from Stage One but adds 35-inch tires, an air compressor, a front winch, a snorkel, a modif...
