I have an extensive lipstick collection, and until my recent exploration into nude lipstick, it consisted largely of reds and berry tones. I decided to try all the red lipsticks on the market because this shade can be a bit intimidating to wear. There’s nothing to hide behind with a red lip. It’s bold, in your face and there’s no room for application mistakes. That’s why great shades and formulas are a must as all reds are not made equal, my friends. There’s also more flattering shades of red for each skin tone, so I wanted to share my favourites for dark skin too. Keep scrolling for my findings. Once upon a time, the Great British department store reigned supreme over the beauty industry. From the latest skincare innovations to some of the most luxe makeup that money could buy, if you were serious about beauty, a department store was always the first port of call. Though, over the years, as new brands began popping up left, right and centre, online beauty destinations grew ever more popular. One particular store, however, has managed to maintain its position as a beauty hotspot, in part due to it’s prominence not only on the high street but also as a sleek virtual destination. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that John Lewis & Partners is fast becoming our beauty destination of choice. During the recent lockdown, the store’s online offering, that ranges...
The concept of fashion and sustainability is an ever-evolving conversation. While we know this industry is one of the world’s major polluters, accounting for around 10% of humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions, there are also several companies who are doing their bit to create products in a more eco-conscious way. Particularly when it comes to swimwear, there are many brands on the market who are committed to using recycled materials, with several labels coming full circle in creating swimwear from recycled from ocean plastic, fishing nets and other industrial waste. This is all made possible through the use of Econyl, a regenerated nylon fabric which is made from 100% recycled materials. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking f...
When it comes to doing my own hair, I have zero patience to do anything elaborate. Even the thought of the sheer time it takes to curl my hair (for context, my hair is rather thin, but there’s a lot of it) is enough to make me tie it up, out of the way. This laziness on my part is largely the reason why I’ve since become obsessed with hair accessories. With the power to make your hair look pretty with minimal effort, hair accessories have become my go-to when my outfit feels a little plain, or I need a quick switch-up. So you can imagine my delight when, a couple of years back, hair accessories became a priority on the style agenda—a place they’ve remained ever since. However, looking at my collection of hair accessories, it dawned on me that most of them...
I would imagine that we’re all fairly well acquainted with Zoom dressing by now, and ‘comfy on the bottom and party on the top’ is probably the phrase that best encapsulates the situation. When all that can be seen of your outfit is a cheeky glimpse of the top third of your body, the humble top is suddenly the star of the show, and with great power comes great responsibility. Yep, it’s time to up our blouse game. Luckily, the high street has delivered on this front, and there have been three styles in particular from Topshop that have caught my eye this season. All easy to throw on but certainly not lacking in drama, they’re the perfect practical-yet-polished look for long WFH days (I would know). Below, IR...
Recently, I told a friend about a new purchase I’d made in the summer sales. It was of a midi skirt, that featured pleats and a unique paisley print, and to be honest I was pretty excited about how much of a bargain it was. “Of course you bought another midi skirt,” my friend said with an eye-roll. “They’re basically your summer uniform.” I’d never thought about this before, but I guess she was right. A printed midi and t-shirt is the outfit combination I wear on repeat, summer after summer. I’m not sure whether it is due to their ease, their comfort, or the fact that you can look put together while hardly trying, but midi skirts are a key element in my summer wardrobe. And I’m not alone, the item is also a hallmark in the wa...
I love glowing skin. I like my skin to have a bronze-looking glow all day long and any product that helps me achieve that while looking natural is an instant winner. And this product is just that. As far as ingredients go, it contains all the same skin-loving technology as the original formula to help support cell turnover and radiance. The main addition, however, is that the new Golden shade contains amber, bronze and white light-reflecting pearl to boost glow and radiance, and there is no pigment in there, so matching skin tone isn’t a worry. Any of the bronzy-looking colour that comes out of the tube is only a result of the pearl, meaning it disperses into a sheer, translucent veil. To tell you the truth, it really took for this formula to come my way to understand what it is that I dis...
Fashion is obsessed with nostalgia. Right now, more so than ever it’s clear that we’re looking more backwards than forwards. I’d say this is the result of a future marred by a pandemic but not so. Case in point: vintage prints, and in particular vintage print dresses, have been gaining traction for some time. From Prada’s spring 2019 collection that celebrated its classic ‘ugly’ prints to Gucci‘s ’70s-rooted aesthetic, there’s been a steady build-up of this trend into our wardrobes for some time. A good test for whether a trend is really popular, you need only glance on Instagram. For me, the vintage or, I should say, vintage-style floral dress is huge in summer 2020. Every time I log on to the app (which is more than I ...
It has now been over two weeks since hair salons in the UK were allowed to open, but many of us are no closer to being able to get our hands on an appointment. And it’s not surprising, really, given the circumstances. You see, a huge number of people all want their hair cut or dyed in a short space of time. However, the last couple of weeks have been more interesting than ever for hairstylists. Not only has the routine of appointments had to drastically change in order to comply with new legislation, but they have also been faced with new challenges when it comes to treatments. “If you haven’t had a haircut in over four months, the quality of the hair is definitely going to be poor. What tends to happen is that the hair starts to split up the hair shaft. Wispy ends...
Over the last few years, Katie Holmes has well and truly solidified herself as one to watch in the style stakes. The actress can practically be credited for the return to the cardigan set, not to mention she has also found herself on best-dressed lists the world over. This summer, it seems Holmes is continuing her reign as a fashionable fave, as the actress has been seen out in New York dressed in a few noteworthy looks. Proving that often less is more when it comes to summer dressing, Holmes stepped out for a walk wearing the ultimate casual ensemble of blue jeans and a plain white tee. The actress accessorised her look with Common Project sneakers, a black handbag and a printed face masks, as per regulations. On another occasion, Holmes decided to step it ...
Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi got married in a private wedding ceremony at All Saints Chapel in Windsor on Friday, 12 July. On Sunday, Buckingham Palace released two beautiful photos of the newlyweds, which highlighted the subtle styling details of Beatrice’s bridal look that honoured her love for her mother, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. Princess Beatrice altered Queen Elizabeth’s vintage Hartnell gown by adding similar puff sleeves worn by Sarah, Duchess of York on her own Links”>wedding day on 23 July, 1986. Ferguson wore an embroidered Lindka Cierach gown for her marriage to Prince Andrew, Duke of York, which featured diamanté embroidery and gigot sleeves — which have come full circle back in fashion. If there’s one summer shoe category that the Who What Wear team love above all other, it has to be the chunky sandal. We don’t care what format it comes in, be it velcro, buckle or slider, we’ll be happy as long as it comes with some junk in the trunk (or, you know, in the sole). The high street has provided a delectable selection this summer, so really we’ve been spoilt for choice. Charles & Keith have to be up there in the chunky sandal stakes, and we’ve lost count of the number of styles that we’ve added to our mental shopping list. So, seeing as both myself and Who What Wear’s assistant editor, Nell, are particularly besotted with this shoe trend, we decided to road-test Charles & Keith‘s coolest...
