Sophie Allison, aka Soccer Mommy, has announced the new Soccer Mommy & Friends Singles Series. Every two weeks she’ll be releasing a paired set of covers. First up is Jay Som taking on Soccer Mommy’s “Lucy”, with Soccer Mommy returning the favor for the 2016 track “I Think You’re Alright”. To tackle Soccer Mommy’s Color Theory-standout “lucy”, Jay Som digitally manipulated her voice to drop it down an octave, while also occasionally accompanying herself in her normal register. This creates a kind of uncanny valley effect, so that the melody sounds lovely and just slightly wrong. “I had an extremely fun time recording the ‘lucy’ cover,” Jay Som said in a statement. “Sophie has such a special way of entwining catchy melodies and sometimes dark chord progressions. I feel very lucky t...
Margo Price has released a special live album that will take fans back to her three-night, sold-out headlining stint at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in 2018. Entitled Perfectly Imperfect at The Ryman, the record features special appearances from Emmylou Harris, Sturgill Simpson and Jack White. “Two years ago today I headlined at @theryman and it was something I had dreamed of since I was a little girl,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “We did three nights in a row and recorded all of them. I am so excited that we are releasing it on Bandcamp today- the recordings are rough and the performances are raw, but there was a magic there and the band was on fire.” Net profits from the first four weeks of album sales on Bandcamp will be donated to MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. In March, Pric...
For Josh Evans, producing Pearl Jam’s Gigaton was the culmination of a long run with the band. Starting out as a studio assistant fetching coffee in 2004, Evans has been with Pearl Jam for more than half of their career. Thus, as his position grew within the band ranks, they entrusted him to oversee the building a custom studio in their Seattle headquarters that was operational at the beginning of 2017. Though Pearl Jam had been working on new material since the release of Lightning Bolt in 2013 (on which Evans was a guitar tech) and around subsequent tours in between, the timing for the opening of their studio lined up for when Pearl Jam was ready to record. Not, though, until the studio space was ready. Evans was busy wiring and finishing up ensuring that the studio w...

Memorial Day is approaching, meaning that many people in the U.S. will have a much-needed long weekend. The U.S. federal holiday, which takes place on the last Monday in May, commemorates and honors all the fallen heroes while serving in the country’s armed forces. Associated with family gatherings, parades, a beach day, or even a day of relaxation, the holiday festivities also marks the “unofficial” start of summer. With so many people in quarantine and social distancing due to the global health crisis, Billboard is curious to know: which Latin artist would you like to have a virtual hang out with on Memorial Day weekend? The list includes CNCO, Daddy Yankee, Karol G, Ozuna, Thalia, and many more Latin music stars who will surely be a fun virtual company. Vote below! You Deserve to ...
Tiwa Savage, Davido and Mr Eazi are opening doors (and labels’ checkbooks). Here’s what they’re up against. The next musical revolution is brewing in Africa. As the industry buzzes with — and profits from — new languages and sounds from all over, the prospects for artists across the continent have never been brighter or more numerous. There have, of course, always been African superstars — from Miriam Makeba to Hugh Masekela to Fela Kuti — as well as great respect for the continent’s music, thanks to projects like Paul Simon’s iconic 1986 album, Graceland, which famously put Ladysmith Black Mambazo and others on the international map. But despite major-label deals, chart successes and eye-popping sales figures, African artists have often been siloed from the popular music landscape, segreg...
Coal Country’s run at New York’s Public Theater has been cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. But Steve Earle is still abundantly enthusiastic about Ghosts of West Virginia, the album that came alongside the production and is premiering exclusively below. The songs scored him a Drama Desk Awards nomination for outstanding music in a play. “We had a hit,” Earle, who performed his songs in the play as “a kind of Greek chorus,” tells Billboard. “People were buying tickets. We were only open officially for a week when it closed, so I feel like we were just at the beginning of it.” Coal Country and Ghosts of West Virginia — which features six songs from the play plus an additional four tracks recorded with his band the Dukes and comes out Frid...
The stage production is inspired by the TV series of the same name, which ran for two seasons on NBC. New musical Smash, inspired by the NBC series of the same name, is headed for Broadway. Steven Spielberg, who is among the show’s lead producers, wrote in a statement that he is “personally thrilled” to be a part of this project. “Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it seems fitting that a new musical inspired by what we did on the show would eventually come to the stage,” continued the filmmaker. “I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this incredible creative team and my producing partners, who began the Smash journey with me over ten years ago.” Tony winner Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone, The Prom) and Tony nominee Rick Elice (Jersey...
