You’ve gotta save yourselves from yourselves.” We’ve been going in circles. The prime numbers are astronomical and we’re all out of throwing boots. We woke up in a mysterious cube full of deadly traps and none of us remembered to bring a calculator. Grab your baton and meet us on the bridge as we try to escape Vincenzo Natali’s Cube. Try to figure out which one of us designed the outer shell as we move through each of the five colored cubes. We’ll discuss nihilism, government conspiracies, dated ’90s stereotypes, and the fundamental roles of humans in a ...
During quarantine, David Gilmour, his wife Polly Samson, and their family have gathered for a weekly “Von Trapped Family” livestream. Originally set up to promote Samson’s new book Theater for Dreamers, the livestreams have evolved to become a sort-of virtual hangout during which the family sings songs, reads poetry, answers fan-submitted questions, and drinks wine. During the latest episode, Gilmour covered two songs composed by former Pink Floyd bandmate Syd Barrett: “Octopus” and “Dominoes”. Gilmour also shared some personal andecdotes about Barrett and their time working together, in addition to revealing that he was asked to proofread a forthcoming book of Barrett’s lyrics. Watch video of the livestream below. Gilmour’s covers of “Octopus” and “Dominoes” can be heard at the times...
There will come a time, probably not too long from now, when someone will turn to Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s album Reunions, see that it was released in 2020 and come to the reasonable conclusion that it was a response to the breakdowns, devastation and (hopefully) eventual reawakening from a global pandemic. To that person, Isbell’s latest release, out on May 15 on his own Southeastern Records — after dropping exclusively at independent record stores a week earlier, an idea Isbell conceived to help keep those precious operations afloat — seems to be saying: “Where have you been?” Isbell (who, of course, wrote and recorded the album long before the world broke) acknowledges the prescience that comes through on so many songs from Reunions, but notes that he just pointed his pen at the ...
With everyone sequestered and self-quarantining due to the coronavirus, we’ve asked our favorite artists to come up with playlists that keep you entertained. This edition is by Marisa Dabic, the singer/guitarist of Philadelphia-based punk band Mannequin Pussy: Fever Blush – “Remember”I know close to nothing about this band. I think they’re from Nashville? Last I checked they only have two songs out – this being one of them. To me, this is a perfect rock ballad – it just hits in that way. It feels familiar but it’s new. Every time I’ve put this song on somewhere – someone inevitably asks me who this band is and I’m have to say uh I don’t really know but I wish I did. The Spirit of the Beehive – “Without You (In My Pocket)”Rivka & Zack’s vocals melt into each other so beautifully on this...
Jerry Stiller, legendary actor and comic of Seinfeld and The King of Queens, passed away on Monday morning. He was 91 years old. His son, Ben Stiller, confirmed the news on Twitter: “I’m sad to say that my father, Jerry Stiller, passed away from natural causes. He was a great dad and grandfather, and the most dedicated husband to Anne for about 62 years. He will be greatly missed. Love you Dad.” A comic, an actor, an author, Stiller spent years on the comedy circuit with his wife Anne Meara as the team Stiller and Meara. He’s perhaps best known for his iconic role as Frank Costanza in Seinfeld and Arthur Spooner in The King of Queens. In addition to his roles in both hit series, Stiller also appeared in a number of films alongside his son, including Zoolander, Heavyweights, The Heartbreak ...
Idris Elba, who battled the coronavirus this year, has lent his voice to a new song about black men and mental health that will benefit pandemic relief efforts. Elba is featured on the song “Kings” by Kosine, a singer-songwriter-producer best known for crafting hits for Big Sean, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. Kosine, whose real name is Marcos Palacios, is one-half of the production duo Da Internz. Elba delivers a spoken word performance on “Kings,” which was released Friday. “This song looks at mental health, mental enrichment. We should stay away from conspiracies as they are a collision of fear and ignorance, two factors that erode our mental health,” Elba wrote on his Instagram page about “Kings.” The Golden Globe-winning actor has dipped his toe in music multiple times: He’s released severa...
Arthur Gunn continues to win hearts with his impressive American Idol run. But there’s one person who has always been in his corner: his mom. During Sunday’s Mother’s Day edition, Gunn delivered another standout performance with a cover of Bon Iver’s “Hey, Ma,” as his mom looked on. The Kathmandu, Nepal-born artist’s matured vocals had judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan suitably gobsmacked. “You’re spoiling us,” Bryan enthused afterwards. “You never have a bad performance.” Richie chimed in, “You could actually sing the phone book. And when I say that, I mean it as a compliment.” There’s much more to come. “Enjoy the ride,” the veteran singer said, “it’s going to be a great journey.” Perry, looking happy and heavily pregnant, told the contestant: “You’re starting to real...
Drake bags his third No. 1 album in Australia, with Dark Lane Demo Tapes (Republic/Universal). The Canadian hip-hop star’s new mixtape bows at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, equaling the chart peaks of his 2016 release Views and 2018’s Scorpion. Dark Lane becomes Drake’s eighth title to impact the top 10 on the ARIA chart, and it opens at No. 2 in the U.K. and No. 1 in the U.K., where Drizzy does the chart double. The Australian top five is completed by former chart-leaders in Harry Styles’ Fine Line (Columbia/Sony), Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia (Warner), Birds Of Tokyo’s Human Design (EMI) and Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (Interscope/Universal), respectively. Also new to the chart this week is Elevation Worship’s Graves Into Gardens (Live) (Sony), at ...
Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber’s blockbuster collaboration “Stuck With U” is set to explode atop the U.K. chart. The new single blasts to No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart: First Look, with a lead of 2,500 chart sales over its nearest rival, Drake’s “Toosie Slide”. “Stuck With U” is raising money for First Responders Children’s Foundation, a charity that will underwrite scholarships for children of frontline workers fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Should it hold on when the Official U.K. Singles Chart is published late Friday, the collab would be Grande’s sixth and Bieber’s eight U.K. No. 1. While the pop duo should claim the title, it won’t be the only feel-good chart story. Dame Vera Lynn is on track to become the oldest living person to score a U.K. top ...
There’s no hyperbole in stating that Little Richard changed rock & roll as we knew it when he broke into the music scene. Look no further than the countless artists who’ve paid tribute to Richard after learning of his passing on Saturday, including Bob Dylan himself. Now, arguably the biggest pioneer of pop-rock music, Paul McCartney, has gone on the record to claim Little Richard taught him “everything he knows” and more. McCartney memorialized Richard with a lengthy tribute on Twitter, essentially crediting Richard for paving the way for The Beatles. When the Fab Four were busy playing residencies at small, McCartney looked to him for inspiration and guidance. “I owe a lot of what I do to Little Richard and his style,” he wrote. “From ‘Tutti Frutti’ to ‘Long Tall Sally’ to ‘Good...
Slowthai loves to get up to no good, and now he’s ready to immortalize one of his most egregious actions in a new song. Presenting “ENEMY”, a single the UK rapper released this weekend that digs deep into his controversial speech from this year’s NME Awards. To understand what he’s getting at on this new track, you must first revisit what went down at the awards show. Back in February, Slowthai was primed to have a big night at the NME Awards. He opened the evening by performing his excellent Mura Masa collaboration “Deal Wiv It”, which went swimmingly until he decided to get cheeky by mooning the crowd. Things somehow got worse. When Slowthai accepted his fan-voted award for Hero of the Year, he harassed host and comedian Katherine Ryan by propositioning her. One audience member was so re...
