Sometimes your favorite band gets sick of being themselves. “We started doing a ton of covers when we switched rhythm sections a few years back – maybe 2015,” Built to Spill frontman Doug Martsch explained over the phone from the comforts of quarantine at his home in Boise. “Brett Nelson and Scott Plouf had played in the band for 15 years or more and both quit at the same time. So we got a new rhythm section and together we learned a ton of Built to Spill songs, but also a bunch of covers – part of it was to try to make the whole thing more fun. Jim Roth, Brett Netson, and I were kinda tired of playing Built to Spill songs, so… [Laughs.] Learning a bunch of covers was really fun and kind of informed this whole thing.” And by that, Martsch means the shows Built to Spill played with the late...

Bad Bunny is aiming to replace himself at No. 1, again, on the Top Latin Albums chart. His surprise release Las Que No Iban a Salir, could earn over 40,000 equivalent album units in the week ending May 14, according to industry forecasters. If it starts as projected, then it will bump his own YHLQMDLG from atop the tally next week, where it’s held for 10 straight weeks since its debut at No. 1 (chart dated March 14). The Top Latin Albums chart ranks the most popular Latin albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which comprises traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). (Warning, spoilers follow) And then there were five. There was plenty of action and drama Tuesday night (May 12) as four contestants were eliminated on NBC’s The Voice. The top vote-getter from each team was Micah Iverson (Team Kelly), Thunderstorm Artis (Team Nick), CammWess (Team Legend) and Todd Tilghman (Team Blake) all of whom advance to the finale next Tuesday. At night’s end, Team Blake’s Toneisha Harris got the save from viewers after her performance of “Loving You” and she becomes the inaugural fifth finalist of the talent show, now in its 18th season. The unlucky four sent home were Joanna Serenko, Allegra Miles, Megan Danielle...

“Say So” is the latest hit to get a lift to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks in part to a remix. When Doja Cat’s “Say So” jumped to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it not only gave the rising star her first chart-topper, but it also marked the latest in a line of singles that got a boost to the top thanks in part to a fresh remix. Nicki Minaj joined Doja Cat for a new reworking of “Say So,” which was released on May 1, and the combined forces of the original version and the remix helped lift the song to No. 1. And, because of the power of the remix, Minaj got credit on the chart as the tune’s featured artist — giving Minaj her first No. 1 on the Hot 100. Considering the news of the “Say So” remix aiding in the No. 1 rise, the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast is taking a stroll d...
Arctic Monkeys (David Brendan Hall), Iggy Pop (Thaib A. Wahab), and Queens of the Stone Age (Philip Cosores) Iggy Pop has announced he will livestream his iconic 2016 concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall in support of Post Pop Depression, the album he released that same year. While all Iggy Pop shows are highly entertaining in their own right, this one was pretty dang special as he was backed by Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders and Queens of the Stone Age members Josh Homme and Dean Fertita. The gig will stream live at 3:00 p.m. ET today on YouTube. The recent Lifetime Achievement Grammy-winner teased the event with a simple tweet, writing, “Ready to re-live it?” For most viewers, it will be a chance to witness that show in all of its glory for the first time. Tony Shalhoub reprised his famed Monk character during the premiere of Peacock’s At-Home Variety Show on Monday. While the return of Adrian Monk was certainly a welcome sight, Shalhoub also used the segment to share some harrowing news: He’s spent the last few weeks in quarantine battling COVID-19. The revelation came later in the Variety Show episode, following Shalhoub’s brief turn as the obsessive-compulsive Detective Monk, who unsurprisingly has been passing his pandemic time religiously cleaning every inch of his house. Out of character and speaking candidly to the camera, the 66-year-old actor confirmed that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus, but were now in recovery. “I hope you’re all being careful and following the protocol. We really are all ...
The NBA season is currently on hold, but fortunately there are many documentaries out there for fans to get their basketball fix. In addition to the hit Michael Jordan miniseries, The Last Dance, Kevin Durant’s new Showtime program Basketball County: In the Water will focus on hoopers from the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) region of the US. However, Basketball County also happens to feature some non-baller talent from that part of the country in rapper IDK, who was born and raised just 30 minutes south of Baltimore. IDK has been enlisted to be the music supervisor, composer, and narrator for the entire series. This is a huge opportunity for IDK, and he’s coming off the bench hot in his new role by dishing out a new single called “495”. Joining him on the track is a dream team of f...
At least someone is getting creative. In order to comply with Texas’ social gathering policy, the Texas Rangers will be hosting a concert series at their stadium in Arlington, but with a twist. All attendees will need to be in their cars to comply with CDC and Texas state regulations. Here’s how the baseball team describe the event: Concert in Your Car is a concert series taking place in Tundra Lot B just North of Globe Life Field, featuring nationally recognized recording artists. The event is designed to give music fans the live show experience, while still maintaining social distancing. Think concert meets drive-in movie. Fair enough. So far, artists on the bill include Texas favorite Pat Green (performing on 6/6), Eli Green Band (6/4), Whiskey Meyers (6/5) and Josh Abbott and Kevin Fow...
