Alex Alexander Delivers Raw, Soulful EP “Helpless”

Swedish pop sensation Alex Alexander is here with his highly anticipated EP, the scintillating electro-pop and Latin-inspired Helpless. The 5-track Helpless EP is a song-cycle of electronic ballads that blend a number of different sub-genres while staying under a melodic umbrella. It’s a pristine demonstration of Alexander’s sound, which is highlighted by bouncy rhythms, acoustic guitar plucks, and raw, emotive vocals.  Alexander kicks things off with the project’s title track, a tropical-inspired pop and moombah hybrid that will have listeners yearning for the sun-kissed, utopian vibes of summer. The ensuing single “Lyin’ Eyes” is a downtempo electronic bop dripping with soul due to its seductive, beguiling horns, lending to a soulful bal...

ZHU Delivers Pop-Friendly Collaboration with Tinashe, “ONLY”

Enigmatic producer and singer-songwriter ZHU returned today with his second single of 2020, “ONLY,” a topical collaboration with R&B songstress Tinashe that is ready for mainstream airplay. Since 2014, ZHU has emerged as one of the more acclaimed talents in electronic music. His platinum debut, Generationwhy, hooked listeners behind cinematic production and ZHU’s lithe vocals. In 2018, he dropped another transformative LP, Dunes, which featured more vocal compositions and collabs with the likes of Tame Impala (“My Life”).  On this latest track, ZHU shows that his evolution of becoming a more complete musician is anything but done. The track—which debuted on Luminosity Gaming’s Twitch channel last night—opens with a ...

Predicting the Legacies of the Quarantine Livestream Boom

How will the flurry of at-home and in-game performances leave their mark on pop music? “We just wanted to fuck around and have a good time,” Post Malone said, sipping from a beer can in a koozie before holding it aloft. “Cheers, fuckers!” In a thunderous 80-minute set of Nirvana covers, livestreamed from his Utah home on April 24, he was funny and loose, wearing a floral day-dress (not unlike the one Kurt Cobain once wore) and checking if his accompanying band was “hot and ready, Lil Caesar’s style.” “Let’s kick this shit in the ass,” he said, referring to COVID-19, before launching into the whiplashing riff of “Drain You.” Post Malone styles himself as a slouchier version of a golden age axe-wielder. He’s covered rock classics and literally has a Nirvana face tattoo, but on the livestream...

Like many around the world, BLACKPINK’s...

Made In Casa: How One Brainstorm Session Became a Seven-Hour Livestream

Nearly 60 artists in 15 countries participated in the Sony Latin festival. It started as a conference call in the middle of the pandemic. Everyone was on lockdown, but everyone had been doing livestreams and podcasts and performances from home. What could Sony Music Latin Iberia do that was unique and involve different artists? “We felt a full-on festival was something that hadn’t been done,” says Ruben Leyva, senior vice president of artist services and premium content for Sony Music U.S. Latin. By “festival,” Leyva of course meant some sort of livestream of musical performances, as well as featuring artists doing everyday things like cooking and working out. The label then sent asks to artists throughout Sony’s Latin territories, asking for a performan...

Zoé Announce New Album Sonidos de Karmática Resonancia, Share “SKR”: Stream

Mexican alt-rockers Zoé have announced a new album called Sonidos de Karmática Resonancia. As a preview, they’ve shared its lead single, “SKR”, as well as a music video. Sonidos de Karmática Resonancia is the band’s seventh studio album to date. It follows their Grammy-winning record Aztlán, which came out back in 2018. While no tracklist has been revealed yet, at least we have “SKR” to tide us over. The song was written by frontman León Larregui and produced by Craig Silvey, who’s worked with fellow alt-rock stars like Arctic Monkeys and Arcade Fire. You can hear a bit of the former mixed in with The Strokes here, as the single uses a closely plucked guitar line to build tension before resolving it all in the chorus, sliding into melodic, drawn-out notes. Editors’ Pic...

DEVO Selling Energy Dome Face Shields

Regardless of what MAGA Nation says, wearing a face mask during a pandemic does not make you a communist. And as the weeks pass by, said face covers are becoming more and more fashion forward. Case in point: DEVO have just unveiled custom face shields made in the style of their iconic Energy Domes (via BrooklynVegan). Not only will you be protecting yourself from airborne particles, but you’ll also be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the DEVO’s world-famous head gear. In a note included alongside the PPE kit’s web store listing, DEVO’s Gerard Casale reflected on the significance of their Energy Domes. It’s the 40th anniversary of DEVO’s Energy Dome – a DEVO icon that is often as misunderstood as the band itself. Although they have been mistaken for flower pots, dog bowls, car urina...

slowthai Drops Killer New Song “BB(BODYBAG)”: Stream

While some struggle to simply get out of their pajamas during this quarantine (me), slowthai has been on an absolute tear when it comes to releasing new music. Following “ENEMY” and “MAGIC”, the 25-year-old rapper is sharing his third single of the week in “BB(BODYBAG)”. Produced by Dom Maker of UK electronic duo Mount Kimbie, the new track is a slightly more subdued affair than slowthai’s two previous offerings, his frenetic rapping wrapped in airier, minimalist atmospherics. Even so, the Nothing Great About Britain artist makes good on the song title’s ominous teasing, dishing out more than a handful of murderous references, and all while name-dropping some left-field folks. “If this was a movie, I’ll be the villain/ You’ll be the bitch I’m killing/ Coin in the well, keep wishin’, s...

Butler discussed his reverence for Run-DMC and McDaniels in the following statement: “I learned most of what I know and utilize in my life musically, socially, and intellectually via hip hop music. I was obsessed with the idea of taking the adversity of the culture experienced and turning it into a song that moved to the beat of the human pulse while telling a story in a way that only adversity influenc...
