In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, movie theaters have taken a huge but obvious hit. People can’t go to theaters (for now) and thus, have resorted to watching old movies…at least in most cases. On May 15, Scoob!, the latest live-action adaptation of the Scooby-Doo franchise landed on streamers and VOD (video-on-demand) services. The soundtrack is full of surprises as well, with contributions from country star Thomas Rhett and in-demand mixtape annihilator Rico Nasty. And one of the more fun aspects of a fun movie is that Best Coast performed a new version of the cartoon’s iconic theme song. But considering their retro-pop bona fides, it actually makes a lot of sense. We caught up with Best Coast singer-songwriter Bethany Cosentino, who explained how it all came togethe...
With the concert industry months into an almost complete standstill, people are trying to figure out ways to bring people to live events again. From drive-in gigs to the infamous “social distant” Travis McCready show in Arkansas, live music organizers are rallying to figure out how to put on a safe event. And now, Production Club, a design firm in Los Angeles, is throwing its hat in the ring with a new protective suit that includes an N95 filtration system and snap-in canisters for drinking, vaping and can even charge your phone. “Micrashell is a solution for bringing people together safety,” Miguel Risueno, head of inventions for Production Club told NBC Los Angeles. “It’s a half suit that kind of takes your safety and your security in terms of being close to airborne particles or viruses...
The latest episode of Killing Eve contained a cryptic cover of Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” by previously unknown band Jack Leopards and the Dolphin Club. Via Pitchfork, a trail of clues suggest that the song actually comes from Swift and Jack Antonoff, while Swift’s brother Austin may be the vocalist. T-Swift left the first breadcrumb herself, when she tweeted about being “VERY STOKED” for the cover by Jack Leopards and the Dolphin Club. Jack Antonoff, a co-writer of the original version of “Look What You Made Me Do”, is listed in the credits as a producer, along with a certain Nils Sjöberg. Swifties will recall Sjöberg as the pseudonym Taylor used for her co-writing role on Calvin Harris and Rihanna’s “This Is What You Came For.” But what about Austin? There are tw...
Chicago band Whitney has released a new cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” featuring the searing guest vocals of Waxahatchee. As if that weren’t enough, Whitney has also served up a version of the R&B classic “Rain” by SWV. While these two covers come from very different sonic backgrounds, together they help demonstrate the range of Whitney’s rock and country-soul sound. Drummer/vocalist Julien Ehrlich brings “Take Me Home, Country Roads” up an octave, allowing his relaxed tenor to float above those iconic southern riffs. For Waxahatchee, aka Katie Crutchfield, this kind of melody is her bread and butter. Her voice obliterates his when they join together for the chorus. But this happens when one half of the duet has a bigger natural instrument than the other, and the ...
Electronic composer Nicolas Jaar isn’t letting 2020 get him down. Already this year he’s released his latest album, Cenizas; dropped an effort under his Against All Logic moniker, 2017-2019; and shared a bunch of unreleased A.A.L. music during a livestream mix. Now, Jaar has announced another new LP, Telas, and debuted not only the first song, “Telahora”, but an additional non-album track called “All One”. Jaar detailed Telas, which means “Veils,” both on his website and during a takeover of Palestine-based internet radio station Radio Al Hara. Due out July 17th on Other People/Mama Records, the album is, at its core, an hour-long piece of music broken into four parts: “Telahora”, “Telencima”, “Telahumo”, and “Telallás”. Joining Jaar in the music making are cellist...
Bucky Baxter, the multi-instrumentalist who played pedal-steel guitar with Bob Dylan in the 1990s, has died at the age of 65. His son, Rayland Baxter, confirmed the news in an Instagram post. No cause of death has been given and Baxter died on May 25. “He is my everything and now he is an angel. My heart is broken yet I am blinded by joy,” Rayland Baxter wrote. Born in Melbourne, Florida, Baxter was based in New Jersey and was known primarily for his pedal-steel work. He performed with Dylan in the 1990s on his Unplugged and Time Out of Mind albums. He was also part of his touring band during this time as well. Baxter also played on R.E.M.‘s Green, Steve Earle’s Guitar Town, Exit 0 and Copperhead Road and Beastie Boys’ Mike D.‘s Country Mik...
Chromeo is here with some much-needed comic relief amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The electro-funk duo took to social media today to delight fans by announcing that they are officially releasing a five-track EP consisting of songs they produced while on lockdown, a collection they are affectionally calling QUARANTINE CASANOVA. Back in April of this year, the Grammy-nominated tandem shared a live preview of EP cut “Clorox Wipe,” a hilariously tongue-in-cheek quaran-jam that croons along to lyrics like, “I’ll be so effective, you won’t be affected / I’m not trying to be your man, I’m just your disinfectant.” They followed by teasing four more hilarious, coronavirus-themed songs, like “‘Roni Got Me Stressed Out” and ...
At the age of five, when kids start to develop early interests like Pokémon card collecting or tee-ball, most parents can safely cross DJing off the list of potential hobbies. Most parents. The parents of five-year-old DJ Archie are not most parents. At a time when other kids his age are learning how to color inside the lines, he is dropping house heaters on his way to becoming a barnstorming international EDM artist. The son of renowned British television host and award-winning “Dear Lovejoy” podcast Tim Lovejoy, entertainment courses through DJ Archie’s veins. Essentially, it was only a matter of time before this miniature prodigy made waves in the music industry. He’s like a can of soda—too much energy on the inside, and it explodes. And we ar...

After the internet discovered that the original name of Grimes and Elon Musk‘s child was not in compliance with California law, many were left wondering what the power couple would do next. Originally named X Æ A-12, the child’s name has now been changed to X Æ A-Xii. California State law restricts parents from using any numbers or symbols in a name, so the “12” was converted to Roman numerals. NME reports that the name change announcement came in the form of a reply to a follower’s comment on a now-deleted Instagram post. Earlier this month, Grimes provided a detailed breakdown on the origin of the name. In the tweet, she demonstrated how each letter and number signified something meaningful to the new parents. Back in February, Grimes released her ...
