Better late than never, right? Rivian is finally taking reservations for its sleekly styled electric pickup and SUV, and after a weeklong period during which only reservation holders for the R1S and R1T electric SUV and pickup could access the automaker’s online configurator tool, you, too, can now virtually build your dream Rivian R1S and R1T.
The first thing you’ll notice when you visit Rivian’s build-your-own tool is that the limited-production R1S and R1T Launch Editions models are sold out. These variants were scheduled to arrive in the middle of next year—June for the R1T and August for the R1S. Launch Editions come with upgrades like special badging and a unique army green (aptly named Launch Green) paint option.
If you didn’t get your hands on a Launch Edition, you can select between the Explore Package and Adventure Package. The Explore is the cheaper trim, featuring black interior accents, vegan leather upholstery, and heated seats on both the SUV and truck. Upgrade to Adventure, and you get an interior with natural ash wood touches and yellow accents. It also boasts an upgraded audio system, special floor mats, a 100-percent recycled microfiber headliner, perforated vegan leather seats, and an off-road package with a reinforced underbody shield, dual front bumper tow hooks, and air compressor. If you’re looking at the R1T, consider getting the $5,000 outdoor kitchen upgrade, which is exactly what it sounds like.
The configurators reveal a host of color options, including shades of silver, white, red, black, blue, green, gray, and yellow. Some cost extra, with the sauciest—Rivian Blue and Compass Yellow—tacking on the biggest $2,500 premium. Inside, the Rivians offer different color schemes depending on the configuration. Perhaps the most intriguing is the green and brown cabin, which reminds us of the colorways available in ’70s-era American luxury barges. Cool.
To reserve your Rivian, you must put down a $1,000 deposit. Fortunately, it’s fully refundable should you change your mind. Rivian warns that options, specs, and pricing might change as the models get closer to production, so if things are looking good to you now, jump on in.
Speaking of prices, the 2021 Rivian R1S is expected to start at $70,000 with the Explore package and $77,500 with the Adventure package. For the R1T, prices begin at $67,500 for Explore and $75,000 for Adventure. These prices don’t factor in tax credits or destination fees. While Launch Edition models arrive next year, you’ll have to wait until January 2022 for the other models.
