Bruce Springsteen has released a cover of the 1962 Ben E. King track “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied).” It serves as the third single from his forthcoming soul covers album Only the Strong Survive. As with the first two singles, the new song arrives with a music video directed by Thom Zimny. Watch below.
“Don’t Play That Song (You Lied)” was co-written by Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun and Ben E. King’s wife, Betty Nelson. Along with the iconic “Stand by Me,” it featured on King’s 1962 Don’t Play that Song! The single has been covered by Aretha Franklin, Johnny Hallyday, Sam Moore, and others.
Only the Strong Survive is out November 11 via Columbia. It includes Springsteen’s versions of “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do),” “Nightshift,” and more.
