Brendan Fraser has been cast as the villain in Batgirl, according to Deadline.
The actor will join Leslie Grace, who is slated to star as the titular superhero in the upcoming Warner Bros. and DC film, as the pyro-themed Batman villain Firefly, according to sources via The Hollywood Reporter. Though plot details are largely under wraps, it is known that the film follows Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, as Batgirl.
The movie, directed by Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Falla from a script by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson, also stars Jacob Scipio and J.K. Simmons, who returns in the role of Jim Gordon after depicting the character in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The film will premiere on HBO Max in 2022, marking the first DC movie to drop exclusively on the streaming platform.
Fraser, who claimed fame for his starring role in The Mummy films, has made a grand return to the acting world this year, having landed the lead role in Darren Aronofsky‘s upcoming movie The Whale as well as a key role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
