MEDIA — At the height of the Great Depression, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went from two small-town nobodies in West Texas to America’s most notorious folk heroes and Texas law enforcement’s worst nightmares.
Theater patrons can get a taste of their escapades when the Media Theatre stages “Bonnie and Clyde,” a musical starring Kelsey Hodgkiss and Gianni Palmarini, running through Sunday, March 26.
In a daring departure from classic musicals, the Media Theatre creative team stages this Tony-nominated musical about this outlaw couple in their fearless, shameless and alluring crime spree.
“Bonnie and Clyde” is a riveting story of love, adventure and crime that captured the attention of an entire country, culminating with their fatal ambush in 1934 in their stolen 1934 Ford V8. This is not a reworking of the film, but instead features a nontraditional score of country, rock and gospel music by Frank Wildhorn.
While it might seem an unlikely subject for a musical, the story is told through songs including “The World Will Remember Me,” “You’re Goin’ Back to Jail,” “Raise a Little Hell,” “Bonnie” and “Dyin’ Ain’t So Bad.”
The show is directed by Jesse Cline with Christian Ryan as assistant director/choreographer, Ben Kapilow as music director and Lee Longenberger as technical director.
The musical premiered in San Diego in 2009 and on Broadway in 2011. It was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2012.
Other members of the Media Theatre cast are Andrew Bozzelli as Clyde’s brother, Buck Barrow; Willa Douglas as Buck’s wife, Blanche Barrow, and Nicholas Perez-Hoop as Texas deputy sheriff Ted Hilton.
