Bob Mould joined the Fred Armisen-led 8G Band for their very final performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Thursday night
Closing out their 10-year run as Late Night‘’ house band, The 8G Band ripped through a cover of Hüsker Dü’s “Makes No Sense At All.” Watch a video of their performance below.
Over the past decade, the 8G Band not only soundtracked episodes of Late Night, but also welcomed a number of sit-in musical guests, including St. Vincent, Tool’s Danny Carey, Turnstile’s David Fang, and more. Now, the 12th season of the show will premiere next month sans a live band.

The 8G Band’s departure was confirmed this past June by the show’s associate musical director, Eli Janney, who told Vulture that they were victims of budget cuts. “Sadly, it’s the reality of broadcast and a shrinking market — streaming eating into this, and YouTube eating into that. Budgets everywhere have been cut and cut and cut… Music gets devalued.” Needless to say, the choice to cover a song called “Makes No Sense At All” was a not-so-subtle nod to the bewildering and unfortunate circumstances surrounding their exit
Meanwhile, Armisen recently appeared in the music video for Lucius’ new song, “Old Tape.” As for Mould, he’ll hit the road for a 2024 tour next month, stopping in New York, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Atlanta, and more cities this fall. Get tickets here.
