The Detroit rapper opens up about balancing both major projects simultaneously, expressing his excitement at being able to contribute to the culture of hip-hop with music that reflects his personal growth. He notes that while the album and the book are separate projects, they share a common theme of self-reflection, growth, and the importance of purpose. “It’s a really honest expression of the different layers of me developing as a person,” Sean explains, pointing to the diverse range of tracks that touch on everything from fatherhood to success in the music industry.

As for how these themes extend to his book, Go Higher shares the lessons Big Sean has learned throughout his career and life. Focused on helping others achieve inner peace and success, the book draws from his own experiences, including his interactions with both musical and non-musical mentors. Sean explains that while the book offers concrete advice, it’s meant to inspire readers from all walks of life, especially those from similar backgrounds. “I’ve kicked it with all these Masters in music and outside of music, and I wanted to share those lessons,” he says, telling a story about watching anime with Thundercat, a man he calls “one of the greatest bass players in the world” (we agree!).

Reflecting on fatherhood, Big Sean highlighted how becoming a dad has changed his perspective on time and life’s fleeting nature. In the heartfelt track “On Up,” he addresses his son directly, capturing the joy and responsibility of raising a child, emphasizing how important it is for him to document these moments not only for himself but for his son, to ensure that he understands the love and care his family has for him.
