Bespoke Fire Black Mercedes-Benz SLR 'McLaren Edition' Surfaces for Auction

RM Sotheby’s is set to auction a rare 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR ‘McLaren Edition,’ one of only 25 examples upgraded by McLaren Special Operations. This exclusive model, three times rarer than the Stirling Moss edition, features a range of performance and aesthetic upgrades that make it highly sought after by collectors.

Originally built in 2006, this SLR underwent significant modifications in 2011 under McLaren’s special upgrade package, designed to enhance both handling and styling. The upgrades reduced the car’s curb weight and increased downforce by 15 percent, thanks to features like a carbon-Kevlar front floor, new wheel arch vents and a lighter ceramic-coated exhaust system. The handling was further refined with new springs, dampers and a lowered ride height, resulting in significantly improved road performance.

This particular SLR is the only one finished in a bespoke Fire Black color, complemented by a Black and Anthracite leather interior. It also sports black wheels from the 722 S roadster model, adding to its unique aesthetic appeal. The total cost for the McLaren Edition upgrades amounted to roughly $217,000 USD, making this one of the most exclusive iterations of the SLR.

With a full service history from Mercedes-Benz of Brooklands and boasting single ownership since new, the car has clocked 23,746 miles. The latest service was completed in February 2024, ensuring it remains in top condition. The car also comes with “The Owners’ Edition” coffee table book, further adding to its collectible value. This unique Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition is set to be auctioned off during RM Sotheby’s upcoming London Sale and is estimated to fetch as much as $900,000 USD.
