Benjamin Senior is a British artist best known for stylized depictions of everyday life. Over the past decade, he has used the human figure as a way to construct rhythmic compositions that render normal situations with otherworldly beauty.
Instead of highlighting leisurely activities, which is emblematic of his past work, Senior focuses on the buzzing borough of South London in a new exhibition titled, “Boundary Lane.” Housed at New York’s James Fuentes Gallery, the artist utilizes egg tempera, a technique used in ancient frescoes, to create choreographed paintings that convey both a feeling of stillness and dynamism.
Senior showcases a penchant for playfulness through subtle acts of repetition, such as a row of artificial heads that coalesce with two real figures in Hair Shop; along with using the bodies of two young men to divide the composition between light and dark in Bullmastiff. As is apparent with the pictorial references, “Boundary Lane” is undoubtedly situated in the here and now, but executed in a way that renders their subjects uncanny and unknowable. The exhibition is on view at James Fuentes Gallery until February 17.
