The much anticipated Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water reportedly has a production budget within the $250 million USD range. Director James Cameron has not yet released the actual number, however he did confirm to GQ that it was “very f***ing [expensive].”
According to Cameron, he also told Disney and 20th Century Studios that his sequel budget was so expensive that it represented “the worst business case in movie history.” He estimated that in order for the film to break even, Avatar 2 would “have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history.” This would mean that the sequel would have rank near the $2 billion USD range. Currently, the original Avatar tops with $2.9 billion USD, Avengers: Endgame comes second in $2.7 million USD, Titanic is in third with $2.1 billion USD. Avatar 2 needs to at least overtake Avengers: Infinity War at $2.05 billion USD or Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $2.07 billion USD.
The original Avatar grossed at $785 million USD domestically and sits at number four on the all-time U.S. box office chart. Currently in fifth domestically is Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick with $716 million USD.
In other entertainment news, Ryan Reynolds reveals he has written a “full Deadpool Christmas movie.”
