Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star in the upcoming adaptation of Broadway’s Wicked. Split into two parts, a new teaser trailer for the first of the two movies premiered during Super Bowl LVIII.
Viewers were transported to the Land of Oz, where Glinda Upland (Grande) and Erivo (Elphaba Thropp) encounter one another while studying sorcery at Shiz University.
“You’re green,” a shocked Glinda remarks upon seeing Elphaba. Although the two initially clash, they unexpectedly become close friends.
“Something just takes over me,” Elphaba warns. “And when it does, bad things happen.”
Rounding out the main cast are Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater and Marissa Bode. Yeoh stars as the headmistress of Shiz University, while Bailey plays Glinda’s love interest, Fiyero. Goldblum appears to play an evil wizard whom Glinda and Elphaba must join forces to take down.
A long time coming, Wicked was announced to be in development at Universal Pictures in 2012. It wasn’t until 2021 that Grande and Erivo were cast, with filming kicking off in 2022. Jon M. Chu, who is best known for Crazy Rich Asians, is directing the movie.
Wicked: Part One is scheduled to premiere later this year on November 27, while Wicked: Part Two is due on November 26, 2025.
