Argentina has won Copa América 2024 to become defending champions. This is the country’s record 16th title, beating Colombia 1-0 to secure the win with a late extra-time goal.
Despite the loss of Lionel Messi to a non-contact injury in the 64th minute that saw the player emotional after being subbed off, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez scored in a much-needed effort in the 112nd minute from a precise pass from Giovani Lo Celso at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Immediately following the goal, Martínez ran to the bench to hug his captain as it marked Argentina’s history-making win to surpass Uruguay with the most Copa América titles.
This match was delayed 75 minutes due to the crowds breaching security at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. Social media saw fans breaching the premises and running in as police scrambled to control the flow of people into the stadium. With this win, Argentina has won their third straight major title after the 2021 Copa América and 2022 World Cup. They have also stopped Colombia’s 28-game wining streak.
