Arca Self-Directed Her New “Incendio” Music Video

Arca has released an official music video for the hard-hitting “Incendio.” A rallying cry against white supremacy and colonialism, the Spanish language track is featured on her Kick III LP.

The music video is tied into Arca’s Mutant;Destrudo residency at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City, where the artist took over the space for four evenings of performances, wrapping up with the final show on October 15. Going above and beyond the typical concert performance, the show was conceptual, layered and full of complex visual elements and infrastructure.

Directed and styled by Arca herself, the “Incendio” video is a montage of cuts from her performances at the Armory, especially the more provoking scenes that see the artist interact with dystopian-seeming technology.

For the show, she collaborated with Japanese artist Daito Manabe and together, they created a custom device that converts electricity signals into music. This process is previewed in the video, showing Arca with wires attached to her head, the recipient of the electrical currents.

“Through myoelectric sensors attached to Arca’s face, we can use technology to intricately, and at times violently, control and transform her expressions,” Manabe said.

Shaun MacDonald did the camera work for the music video, while lighting design was helmed by Vincent de Belleval. Masaki Teruoka contributed engineering and Naoki Ishizuka and Rina Watanabe managed the project with assistance from 2bit.
