Apple’s iPod Era Has Officially Ended

Apple’s iPod Era Has Officially Ended

Apple on Tuesday announced that it is finally discontinuing the iPod, after more than 20 years, with the latest seventh-generation Touch to be the last model ever released.

The tech giant shared the news on its website, stating that the music-playing device has essentially become unnecessary among Apple’s extensive lineup of products that are capable of playing music, including the iPhone, iPad and HomePod Mini, among others.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impact more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a statement.

“Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV,” he added. “And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music.”

The first iPod debuted in October 2001, and the device has since seen 26 different iterations. The most recent model, the seventh-generation iPod Touch, will remain available for purchase at several retailers and on Apple’s website while supplies last.

In more tech news, Google is forming a team to help developers launch Web3 apps.
