Rick and Morty‘s Dan Harmon has joined forces with New York Times bestselling author Nathan Pyle on the forthcoming AppleTV+ series, Strange Planet. The adult animated series – an adaptation of Pyle’s bestselling graphic novel and webcomic of the same name – unveiled its first trailer earlier today, which gives viewers a look into the show’s quirky and absurd alternate universe.
According to Apple TV‘s website, the satirical series offers a “hilarious and perceptive look at a distant world not unlike our own.” The trailer opens with the ominous yet inviting, “What if our world isn’t the only one where existence is absurd…” An array of outlandish yet familiar scenarios play out on the screen, with a group of “relatable blue beings” as the show’s stars.
One blue character approaches another blue character (who is stationed behind a beverage bar of sorts) to inquire about “jitter liquid.” The bar clerk holds up three pill bottles and inquires in response: “Would you like to jitter for one, two or five hours?”
The peculiar alternate universe, dominated by pinks, purples and blues, is comprised of silly scenarios as well as hard-hitting existential lessons. As stated near the close of the trailer: “The bad moments will pass. Even the good moments will pass. That’s what our existence is all about.”
Tunde Adebimpe, Demi Adejuyigbe, Lori Tan Chinn, Danny Pudi and Hannah Einbinder star in Strange Planet as voice actors. Strange Planet marks Apple TV’s second animated venture alongside Central Park.
The first three episodes of Strange Planet will hit Apple TV+ on August 9, and then the seven remaining episodes of the series will release on a weekly basis until the finale on September 27.
