Apple will be helping customers to complete their own device repairs with a new program. Self Service Repair will give customers access to instructions and the tools necessary to fix hardware issues at home.
Set to debut first for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups, the program will launch in the United States early next year, with plans to reach additional countries throughout 2022.
It will initially focus on core hardware repairs such as the display, battery and camera.
Customers seeking repairs will be directed to review Apple’s Repair Manual and order the necessary tools and parts from the company’s online repair store, which will offer more than 200 individual items. After the repair is complete, customers can return their used parts in exchange for credit toward their purchase.
“Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.
“In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”
Next year, Apple will work on expanding the program to service additional iPhone repairs and repairs to Mac computers featuring the M1 chip.
The program follows 2019’s Independent Repair Provider program, in which the company trains independent businesses to fix Apple devices and grants them access to its original parts and tools.
Apple noted that the service is “intended for individual technicians” and advised that the majority of customers still visit a certified professional as the safest way to get their devices repaired.
