This week, the tech industry was hit with the latest in AI: word of a new content moderation system developed by OpenAI. GPT-4 LLM is in development as a software tool designed to take the burden of harmful content moderation off of human employees but apparently, not replace them entirely.
On the product side, House of Marley released a new turntable crafted entirely out of sustainable materials. Apple, meanwhile, is rumored to be working on a special edition “Apple Watch X,” while Home Depot now carries a $4,000 USD smart door.
Below, Hypebeast has rounded up the top tech stories of the week so you can stay up to date on trends in the industry.
OpenAI Is Developing an AI-Powered Content Moderation System
OpenAi is engineering an AI-powered content moderation system. The tech company bills its new software, called GPT-4 LLM, as a way to provide faster updates and take the burden off of human content moderators. While websites would typically enlist humans to sift through and sort out harmful material, GPT-4 LLM is intended to streamline the process.
OpenAI says that it doesn’t want to wipe out human moderators entirely, and that they’ll still be necessary, especially when first training the program, but envision the tool as a means of speeding up the process.
House of Marley Launched the Stir it Up Lux Bluetooth Turntable
House of Marley has a mission to bring eco-consciousness to the music industry with its growing lineup of hardware constructed out of sustainable materials. The latest addition is the Stir it Up Lux, a bamboo turntable that can also be used as an amp thanks to Bluetooth connectivity. Other materials in the piece are aluminum, glass and a unique type of cork made from stripped-down tree bark.
“Vinyl is the most genuine way to listen to your favorite music – there’s no skipping tracks, so you’re listening to the album exactly as the artist intended you to,” says Cedella Marley, Bob Marley’s daughter.
The Stir it Up Lux is available on House of Marley’s website and at participating retailers for $399.99 USD.
Home Depot Debuted a $4,000 USD Smart Door
Home Depot is leaning into smart products with a new smart door. Designed by Masonite, the M-PWR starts at $4,000 USD and comes with a Yale smart lock and equipped with a Ring doorbell, along with sensor lights and app connectivity. Some additional features are optional, and with those, the door can cost up to $7,000 USD.
The installation, however, isn’t so seamless. The door requires an actual electrician to come install it, as it runs on your home’s electricity. A bonus of the pricey door, though, is that in the event of a power outage, Masonite included a backup power source within the door so that it’ll still work for a limited period of time.
Apple Is Reportedly Designing a Special Edition ‘Apple Watch X’
Ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch in 2025, Apple is reportedly building a new model called the “Watch X.” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his recent Power On newsletter that the special edition of the watch would contain a new microLED display and a thinner case. Apple would presumably use the extra room in the case for a more powerful battery.
“People involved in the development of new Apple Watches say the system takes up a considerable amount of space that could be better filled with a bigger battery or other components,” Gurman wrote.
Apple is still expected to put out its Apple Watch Series 9 next month and has yet to confirm any rumors surrounding the Watch X.
