Apple’s top iPhone and Watch designer Tang Tan will be leaving the company in February. Tan has been enlisted by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Jony Ive, Apple’s former Chief Design Officer, to join his design firm LoveFrom, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
At the firm, which Ive launched after leaving Apple in 2019, Tan will be tasked with working on an “AI hardware project,” creating new devices with advanced capabilities.
He’ll reportedly be responsible for the look and engineering of the hardware, while Altman will provide the software. While the endeavor isn’t yet public, per Bloomberg’s inside sources, “projects in the concept stage include devices for the home.”
Ahead of Tan’s departure early next year, his responsibilities are reportedly being split up among existing employees. In the time since Ive left Apple, Bloomberg says that about 14 members of the product design team have left the company, with only half of the original staff that worked under him remaining.
