‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Makes $110 Million USD Domestic Box Office Debut

'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' Makes $110 Million USD Domestic Box Office Debut

Despite being one of the lowest-rated Marvel films on Rotten Tomatoes, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has caused quite a buzz at the box office on opening weekend.

The MCU film to kick off Phase Five, charged into theaters beating expectations and even scored the biggest opening weekend of the Ant-Man trilogy. The pint-sized superhero adventures feature Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as the titular heroes. The movie brought in $110 million USD at the domestic box office and hit expectations of $225 million USD at the global box office. While the film did do well internationally, Variety has reported that the performance in China was abysmal, only making $19.2 million USD.

In comparison to its predecessors, the first and second film had openings of $57 million USD and $76 million USD respectively. However, both films did better on the Rotten Tomatoes scale. The film hit the U.S. market during a long-weekend holiday and based on the opening weekend returns, the third film in the franchise is expected to bring in big numbers. The film introduces Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, the heir apparent to the villainous Thanos and also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglass and Kathryn Newton. The movie topped box office charts and saw James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water stay in second place for its 10th weekend after the release.

In other entertainment news, Disney is set to slow down Marvel releases as it eyes the return of the Star Wars franchise.
