Anne Hathaway and Disney have confirmed the third installment of the Princess Diaries franchise. Almost 20 years since the film series latest debut, Anne Hathaway has taken to Instagram to reveal that she is officially returning for the sequel. The first film came out in 2001 and the second in 2004.
Adele Lim has been confirmed to direct the third movie of the franchise and while it has been in development since 2022, Hathaway has been coy about her return until now. The actress has officially broken her silent surrounding her involvement in the upcoming film, taking to social media to make the announcement. In a video on Instagram, she is seen holding up three fingers to count to “3,” signifying to her fans that she is discussing the third film. In between, cuts from the other two films are intertwined, including iconic scenes of Mia saying “shut up” along with Julie Andrews‘ also saying “shut up.” The caption read, “Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues.”
Director Lim said in a statement, “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.” At this time, the plot of the third film has not yet been confirmed.
