Andrew Garfield Recalls Making ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ To Be Heartbreaking

Andrew Garfield recently reflected on his time filming the 2012 film, The Amazing Spider-Man.

In a recent interview with The Guardian Garfield said that following the release of the 2012 film, he had an “awakening.” He expressed his disappointment stating, “I got my heart broken a little bit. I went from being a naive boy to growing up…How could I ever imagine that it was going to be a pure experience?” Garfield recalls the realization that much of the production was driven by the “millions of dollars at stake and that’s what guides the ship.”

The titular actor said that he struggled with finding a purpose for these films and that working for the box office numbers took the “soul out of it.” He explained, “Comic-Con in San Diego is full of grown men and women still in touch with that pure thing the character meant to them. [But], you add in market forces and test groups and suddenly the focus is less on the soul of it and more on ensuring we make as much money as possible.” He adds,

“I found that heartbreaking in all matters of the culture. Money is the thing that has corrupted all of us and led to the terrible ecological collapse that we are all about to die under.”

While he does express his concerns, he makes it a point to note that he is joking and that “it’ll take a bunch of years before that happens.”

In other entertainment news, the new Dexter trailer provides a sneak peek at the New Blood revival series.
