Anderson .Paak is ready to make his directorial debut. Media company Stampede Ventures has revealed that the rapper and multi-instrumentalist is set to direct K-POPS!, a new comedy drama film. Anderson .Paak will star in the movie as a washed-up musician who travels to Korea to write songs for K-pop stars, only to learn that his long-lost son (played by his real-life son Soul Rasheed) is fronting one of the country’s newest rising acts.
“My mom is from Korea but she was adopted so I never knew anything about my Korean heritage until I met my wife. This movie is a reflection on my experience learning about this part of myself alongside my wife and son – and spending even more time with them,” said .Paak in a statement. “I knew this would be something I should write and direct, and Stampede Ventures took a chance and trusted that I could pull this off. I’m excited to bring it to the big screen.”
The script for K-POPS! was co-written by Anderson .Paak and Khaila Amazan. He’s also producing via his company APESHIT Films in addition to Greg Silverman on behalf of Stampede Ventures, Jaeson Ma on behalf of EST Studios, and Jon Park on behalf of Big Dummie.
It’s been busy year for .Paak with Silk Sonic, his ‘70s R&B project with Bruno Mars. After releasing their debut album An Evening with Silk Sonic in November, the duo performed at the 2022 Grammys where they won four Grammy Awards for their single “Leave the Door Open” (Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song). The duo are currently in the middle of a Las Vegas residency.
Back in February, .Paak performed at the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show where he played drums for Eminem’s segment. He also stopped by Sesame Street to sing “What Is a Holiday,” a song celebrating various holidays around the world, with Elmo and Cookie Monster.
