Netflix has announced that an animated series set in the Stranger Things universe is currently in development.
Announcing the news on April 10, Stranger Things creators, The Duffer Brothers, revealed that they were working on the currently-untitled spin-off project, which is being described as “in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons” they grew up with.
This is currently the latest Stranger Things spin-off known to be in development, with a live-action project and a stage play — directed by Stephen Daldry — titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow, expected to debut on London’s West End later this year. The Duffer Brothers are also working on a live-action TV series, along with a series interpretation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman.
Speaking about the new animation Stranger Things spin-off, The Duffer Brothers said in a statement: “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you.
“There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first, we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom.”
A release date of the new series is yet to be announced, however, filming for the new season is expected to begin this year.
In other entertainment news, Kim Kardashian will be in season 12 of American Horror Story.
