Concept art, by its very definition, comes in all shapes and forms. Take Maurizio Cattelan‘s duck-taped banana, formerly known as Comedian (2019), or a new gold cube that appeared in the middle of New York’s Central Park today. Weighing in at over 400 pounds, the cube is made entirely of 24-karat gold and worth a whopping $11.7m USD.
The project is the brainchild of German artist, Niclas Castello, who told Artnet News that he wanted to “create something that is beyond our world—that is intangible.” Coincidentally, Cattelan had already tinkered with a similar sculpture in New York — a gold toilet — at the Guggenheim back in 2016, rendering Castello’s work interesting but non entirely new, per say.
To accompany the work, however, Castello will also release an accompanying NFT, the Castello Coin, which will hit auction on February 21. Cast in Switzerland, the 1.5-foot cube required a special kiln to hold its content and the extreme temperatures needed for the melting process. The sculpture is currently at a private dinner on Wall Street.
Elsewhere, Hugo Comte will unveil “Testament” at Galerie Hussenot.
