Netflix always wants its annual Geeked Week events to get people hyped up about all of the new movies and series it’s been cooking up to dazzle subscribers and convince newcomers to sign up. That’s much easier said than done. But between the new trailers and sneak peeks from series like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Devil May Cry, and the new live-action adaptations of Avatar: The Last Airbender and 3 Body Problem scheduled to debut at this year’s showcase, Geeked Week 2023 feels like something to get excited about.
All of this week’s new teases and first looks will come as part of three separate virtual presentations that you can stream on YouTube, but you can also follow along with us here for more details and updates.

Geeked Week continues on Sunday, but the focus will be on one specific project: Zac Snyder’s sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, which is getting a new trailer ahead of its December premiere.

A new creature feature.
Gyeongseong Creature is the latest in a growing list of Korean series on Netflix, and it looks like a fascinating bit of monster mayhem up against the backdrop of real-world history. The first teaser doesn’t show much of the actual creatures, but we’ll find out more when the show starts streaming on December 22nd.

It’s been a while since we learned that Netflix was teaming up with Production I.G for a Terminator anime, but today we finally have some more details on the show. The debut teaser for the anime was featured at Netflix’s Geeked Week event, and it shows, well, the title and not much else.
For the unaware, animation studio Production I.G has worked on some of the most iconic anime ever, from the original Ghost in the Shell film all the way up to recent releases like the Star Wars Visions anthology. For Terminator — which doesn’t have an official name yet, by the way, and is somehow the first animated take on the franchise — the eight-episode series will be directed by Masashi Kudo, best-known for working on the Bleach franchise, with Mattson Tomlin (Project Power and Mother/Android) serving as writer and showrunner.

Good vs. evil, but with cats.
We already knew that Netflix was working on an animated series based on the card game Exploding Kittens, and now we have our very first glimpse at the series, which features god in the body of a cat and a very confounding garage door. The show is expected to start streaming in 2024.

Following last year’s The Sandman, Netflix is bringing even more beloved Neil Gaiman characters to the small screen. This time it’s Dead Boy Detectives — which was originally slated to stream on Max — based on a crime-solving duo who made their debut in a Sandman comic in the ’90s. The news was paired with the first trailer for the series, which shows off a pretty fun-looking supernatural whodunit.

The distressed look.
Saturday’s edition of Geeked Week opened with the first trailer for Damsel, in which “a dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt.” It stars Millie Bobby Brown as the princess, is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and will hit Netflix in 2024.

Another afternoon of Netflix announcements.
For the third day in a row, Netflix is streaming a whole bunch of news about its upcoming shows, movies, and games. Today’s once again takes place at 4PM ET, and will include, among other things, a first look at the film Damsel with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.

The message is clear in Leave the World Behind’s new teaser clip.
The scale and gravity of the imminent danger everyone is in isn’t clear to humans in Netflix’s upcoming feature length adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel Leave the World Behind.
But in a new clip from the film, every single forest animal living in the northeast coast seems to know what the deal is, and that they need to get the hell out of dodge before whatever the danger is gets them.

It remains to be seen just how much of the fascinating, winding complexity of Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem ends up making it into Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the novel from co-creators Alexander Woo, D.B. Weiss, and David Benioff. But in a new clip from the show that’s just dropped as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week showcase, it looks like 3 Body Problem (that’s how Netflix is spelling it) is going to get one of its most important worldbuilding elements very right in a way that makes the story’s deeper mystery interesting to watch unfold.
While the new teaser clip debuted during Geeked Week doesn’t really broach the way 3 Body Problem’s story delves into China’s past and what becomes of humanity at one of the most pivotal moments in modern history, it does establish one of the meanings of its title.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution’s teaser is a reminder to not skip leg day.
Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revolution series from Kevin Smith will see Eternia fall after Skeletor (Mark Hamill) wins in an epic battle with He-Man (Chris Wood) that damages the very fabric of reality.
But while the sword-bearing hero might be on the ropes, the show’s new teaser trailer definitely makes it seem like he might end up crushing his nemesis with those massive tree trunks Powerhouse worked to hard to animate.

Netflix dropped a bit of a “Smile Bomb” (if you know, you know) during Geeked Week 2023. Not only did it share the first trailer for the live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho but we also got a release date. And it’s soon.
If you’re an anime fan of a certain age, I’m guessing simply reading the words “Yu Yu Hakusho” conjures a very specific sound in your head.

Season 4 of The Witcher may be far off on the horizon, but there’s still plenty more of Geralt of Rivia in store on Netflix. At its Geeked Week event today, the streamer announced The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, an animated movie that takes place right in the middle of season 1 of the live-action show and is based on the short story A Little Sacrifice. Doug Cockle, the voice actor from The Witcher 3 video game, will be reprising the role of Geralt.

Lofi beats to kill and relax to.
Katana Zero, a game with one of the chillest soundtracks this side of Minecraft, is the next indie hit coming to mobile via Netflix. In the game, you play a samurai tasked with using his powers of precognition and sword to kill baddies in one hit. Problem is, he can get one-hit KO’d, too forcing the samurai to rewind and try again.

Knock, knock, knocking on Death’s Door.
Netflix has added another solid game to its roster of mobile exclusives. Death’s Door is a top-down action RPG dungeon crawler that feels like a kinder, gentler Soulsborne.
It won Best Indie Game at the 2021 Golden Joystick Awards while receiving Best Indie nominations from just about everywhere including The Game Awards and all the way up to the BAFTAS. Death’s Door launches on Netflix soon.

Watch out for the snake.
Netflix hasn’t really let up its push into anime, and the latest example is its adaptation of the Onmyōji fantasy novels. The series starts streaming on November 28th, but you can check out a new clip from the first episode right now — which features a cute frog and a not-so-cute snake.

Get obliterated.
The creators of Cobra Kai are back with what’s described as “a high octane action-comedy that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas.” You can get a sense of that in the clip below, before the whole series starts streaming on November 30th.

Oh brother.
The first teaser for The Brothers Sun is short, but it packs in a lot, from a fight in a dinosaur suit to Michelle Yeoh drilling into a dead body. Not sure what else you need. The dark action comedy hits Netflix on January 4th.

Ultraman’s classic powers make him well-equipped to deal with almost any larger-than-life situation threatening the lives of ordinary people. But in the first teaser for Netflix’s new animated Ultraman: Rising feature from co-directors Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima, none of the hero’s incredible powers can prepare him for the challenges of becoming a father… to a baby kaiju.
Ultraman: Rising tells the story of how Japanese baseballer Ken Sato (Christopher Sean) returns to his home country with the intention of becoming the next Ultraman and Earth’s protector, only to inadvertently find himself saddled with the responsibility of raising a baby kaiju. When an encounter with one of Ultraman’s deadliest monster enemies results in Ken’s Ultraman form being the first thing the infant sees in the new trailer, it imprints on the hero in a way that opens up a world of danger for them both.

We’ve seen the announcements, then the actors, the teaser, and now the first official trailer for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation is finally here.
The trailer was a short but packed affair, offering really good looks at both the main characters and the just-as-beloved side characters. Kyoshi Warrior Suki looks amazing, as does the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se. Avatar fans, it is looking good.

The video game adaptations just keep coming. This time it’s The Dragon Prince — which is getting a sixth season next year — being turned into an RPG. The Dragon Prince: Xadia launches next year.

Come on over to the dark side.
It’s hard to know what to expect from an animated Dreamworks film written by Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich), but the first trailer for Netflix’s Orion and the Dark looks surprisingly… normal. Maybe that’ll change when we see the full movie, which starts streaming in February.
