Alicia Keys‘ semi-autobiographical musical Hell’s Kitchen saw its world premiere at New York City’s Public Theater on November 19. Now not even a month post-opening night – and selling out nearly every show thus far – Hell’s Kitchen is officially set to head to Broadway, opening at the Shubert Theater on April 20, 2024.
Hell’s Kitchen features new songs by Keys as well as many of her timeless tracks such as new arrangements of “Fallin’,” “Girl on Fire,” “No One” and “Empire State of Mind.” Keys herself does not perform in the show, but, per the New York Times, spent over a decade working closely with playwright Kristoffer Diaz who wrote the book Hell’s Kitchen is also loosely based off. The official synopsis reads as follows:
In a cramped apartment hanging off the side of Times Square, 17-year-old Ali is desperate to get her piece of the New York dream. Ali’s mother is just as determined to protect her daughter from the same mistakes she made. When Ali falls for a talented young drummer, both mother and daughter must face hard truths about race, defiance, and growing up. Ali feels trapped, until the sound of a neighbor playing piano opens the door to an unexpected friendship and a radically different future.
Maleah Joi Moon, Shoshana Bean, Chris Lee, Kecia Lewis, and Brandon Victor Dixon all currently star in Hell’s Kitchen Off-Broadway production, though the Broadway cast has yet to be announced.
Camille A. Brown leads the choreography and Michael Greif serves as the director; Grief’s previous credits span Rent, Next to Normal, and Dear Evan Hansen. Keys’ AKW Productions also serves as a Hell’s Kitchen producer.
Hell’s Kitchen wraps its Public Theater run on January 14, 2024. Stay tuned for further ticketing information as it surfaces.
