Adrian Gonzalez Uses Spanglish to Create Artwork That Reflect Cultural Interactions

For anyone who is bilingual, it is commonplace to find words or phrases that are simply lost in translation. Oftentimes, a hybrid form of both languages emerge — Frenglish, Spanglish, any combination really — the latter of which is the starting point to a new exhibition by Florida-based artist, Adrian Gonzalez.

On view at Bruno David Gallery in St. Louis, Gonzalez presents Lonchado in the Grass — an in-depth exploration into Spanglish and the cultural interaction that reflects the present times. Gonzalez was born in California but has lived in Ecuador, Puerto Rico, New York, and Florida — each area possessing its own set of ideas and modes of communication.

Housed at the gallery are paintings, prints and sculptures made from a variety of traditional and found materials, all of which seek to emanate the improvisational creation of language found in Spanglish. Highlights include Tower of Bobo, 2022, a totemic assemblage of various baseball caps made of Papier-mâché, along with Eniweis #4-5 (diptych), 2022, which showcases Gonzalez’ 10 year experience working as a master printmaker at Flying Horse Editions.

Lonchado in the Grass is on view at Bruno David Gallery until October 22.

Elsewhere, Takashi Murakami leads Roppongi Art Night 2022 with a 32-foot-tall Doraemon.
