A$AP Rocky opened up about JAY-Z‘s reaction to his track “Goldie” in the latest preview of his upcoming Drink Champs episode.
The rapper first clarified that when he wrote and released the 2012 track, he was unaware that the Armand de Brignac champagne brand — known as Ace of Spades — was actually owned by Hov. “When I first came out, I’m like, ‘Cristal by the cases, maybe that was racist/I would prefer the Aces, ain’t no different when you taste it.’ Like, I ain’t know Hov — I ain’t know JAY owned Ace of Spades. I ain’t gonna lie, I don’t think he was jacking it,” he admitted with a laugh.
Rocky continued that JAY-Z spoke to some of his A$AP Mob associates about the line, and was pleasantly surprised that the legendary rapper even knew who they were at that point in their young careers. “He seen like, A$AP Bari and them, he called them to the side like, ‘Yo, come here. Let me holla at y’all.’ It’s like my first song…I don’t even know he know them n****s,” he explained. “[JAY] was like, ‘So, your mans. What’s up with that line?’ ‘Cause I might’ve said some crazy shit like “sip Cris and f*ck Ace,’ I ain’t know it was owned by the n***a, you know what I’m saying? So he was just like, ‘You know, they don’t really support us. They not for us. Cristal, they racist.’”
