Noah Cyrus Contemplates the Universe in ‘The End of Everything’ Video: Watch

If things seem grim now, locked down, shut out and cut off from all that we used to know, get a load of the video for the title track from Noah CyrusThe End of Everything EP. The beautiful disaster clip released on Tuesday (May 19) contemplates the rapid devolution of our planet and eventual end of it all in a three-minute nature film to end all nature films.

“The inspiration behind this song changed my life,” Cyrus says in a statement about the gentle acoustic country pop ballad from the recently released mini-album. “It’s all inspired by a time-lapse video of the universe I saw by John Boswell, who also directed my video for this song. For me, it really put into perspective how shortly lived our moments here as humans are. Situations from when I was younger started entering my head that I wanted to apologize for. There were people I wanted to reach out to that I hadn’t checked in on in a while.  There were wrongs that I felt needed to be made right. I realized I needed to appreciate the current moment more, and to let the ones I love know I love them. The message that what we have RIGHT NOW is what matters. Nothing else.”

In the Boswell-helmed visual, Earth spins beginning in 2020, then whirls faster and faster as deserts transform, mountains erode, Saturn’s rings vanish and all planet life dies off as Cyrus sings, “And there might not be a sadder thing than watching Saturn lose her rings/ And black holes slowly dancing in the dark/ It’s a song that they were born to sing/ About the end of everything/ Until it all goes up in one last spark/Everyone you love is gonna die/ But so is everything so wipe your eyes/ You know nothin’ lasts forever, but lord we try/ Everyone you love is gonna die.”

It’s a tragically sad, but ultimately empowering truth of life, that everything we know is only temporary, and once we reach nine thousand trillion years and the last black hole evaporates, as the video reminds us, “time becomes meaningless.” And, as Cyrus sings, there ain’t no sweeter thing than that.
