Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers each earn their first career entry on the Billboard Hot 100 (chart dated Nov. 28), as their duet cover of Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” debuts at No. 57 after just one day of sales availability.
The remake, billed to Phoebe & Maggie, also opens as the top-selling song of the week with 38,000 downloads sold in the week ending Nov. 19, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, and debuts as each singer-songwriter’s first No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart. The track was released as a pay-what-you-want one-day exclusive on Bandcamp on Friday, Nov. 13 (with its sales total noted above, which exceeded initial reports, encompassing purchases in line with Billboard’s minimum pricing rules for chart eligibility).
Phoebe & Maggie’s cover also debuts at No. 5 on both the Hot Alternative Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs rankings.
Bridgers promised to cover Goo Goo Dolls’ 1998 hit if Donald Trump lost the presidential election (Nov. 3), and Rogers then offered to sing backup harmonies on the track. The cover drew attention on social media, even earning a stamp of approval from the Goo Goo Dolls themselves.
Proceeds from Phoebe & Maggie’s version benefit Georgia politician Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight organization, which promotes fair elections in Abrams’ home state and nationally, while also encouraging voter participation and voting rights education.
Goo Goo Dolls’ original recording, first released on the City of Angels soundtrack, reached No. 9 on the Hot 100 in December 1998 (thanks to a rule change that allowed songs not released as commercial singles to become eligible for the chart). It ruled Billboard’s Radio Songs chart for a then-record 18 weeks, a mark unbroken until The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” dominated for 26 weeks this year.
While Bridgers and Rogers are newcomers to the Hot 100, they’re no strangers to Billboard’s charts. Bridgers’ sophomore solo LP Punisher reached No. 2 on Alternative Albums in July, and she’s earned three hits on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart: “The Night We Met” with Lord Huron (No. 25 in 2018), “Kyoto” (No. 36, this April) and “Garden Song” (No. 42, this July). Her collaborative albums as a member of Boygenius (with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus) and Better Oblivion Community Center (with Conor Oberst) have also hit multiple charts.
Rogers’ debut LP Heard It in a Past Life debuted at No. 1 on Alternative Albums and No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in February 2019, while she’s tallied five entries on the Adult Alternative Songs radio airplay chart. Two climbed to No. 1: “Light On” in 2019 and “Love You for a Long Time” this February.
Since releasing their version of “Iris,” Rogers announced her archival project Notes From the Archive: Recording 2011-2016, due Dec. 18, while Bridgers released a new EP of reworked tracks from Punisher, titled Copycat Killer, on Nov. 20, plus a new charity cover of Merle Haggard’s 1973 song “If We Make It Through December” on Nov. 23, with proceeds benefiting the Downtown Women’s Center.
