We’ll always miss the Challenger Demon, the limited-production street-legal drag-strip-demolisher that wowed back in 2017. We’re glad Dodge revived much of its spirit with the new Super Stock, and in case that isn’t enough for you, Mopar is now offering a new crate engine that can give your project car the heartbeat of both mighty Dodges.
The familiar 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V-8 delivers 807 hp, the same output as the Super Stock and 1 pony less than in the Demon. The crate engine’s torque rating matches the Demon at 717 lb-ft, and it is the most powerful muscle-car engine Mopar has ever made available to home builders, at least when it comes to production-based engines.
A less powerful version of the engine is also found in the Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat Redeyes. As such, the Mopar crate engine, now available to order, is dubbed the “Hellcrate Redeye.” Buyers can put it into any pre-1976 vehicle.
The new offering joins four other Hemi crate engines in the Mopar lineup, the least powerful one being a 5.7-liter unit with 375 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a 6.4-liter mill with 485 hp and 475 lb-ft and a 6.2-liter supercharged “Hellcrate” engine with 707 hp and 650 lb-ft. If you really want to turn things up a notch, get the “Hellephant” supercharged engine with 1,000 hp and 950 lb-ft.
How much does the new Hellcrate Redeye cost? A cool $21,807. Predictably, that price slots between the Hellcrate’s $20,215 price tag and the Hellephant’s $29,995 sticker. At that latter price, you could buy a whole Challenger coupe.
To complement the crate engine, a Front End Accessory Drive kit includes an alternator, power-steering pump, belts, pulleys, and mounting hardware.
If you want the Hellcrate Redeye’s power in its rightful package, no assembly required, the Super Stock looks promising. Dodge is only selling 200 copies for the 2020 model year, making it much rarer than the Demon. However, Super Stock production is ramping up for the 2021 model year, so this won’t be a limited-production vehicle. We can’t wait to get behind the wheel.
