32-year-old forward Neymar Jr. has reached a mutual agreement with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal to terminate his contract. This leaves the door open for Neymar Jr.’s expected return to Brazil’s Santos FC — the team he came up through the youth ranks. ESPN reports that Neymar Jr. is expected to sign a six-month contract with an option of an additional year at Santos in the next few days.
Along with terminating his contract, Neymar has agreed to give up a significan portion of his salary from his original deal. He is said to forfeit between $25 million to $30 million USD from the remainder $65 million USD from his contract. After joining the club in 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain for $97.6 million USD. he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee when he played for Brazil in the World Cup. This was shortly after he joined Al-Hilal and his recover hindered his ability to play to his fullest with the Saudi Arabian team. He only returned to the field last October, playing a total of seven games with Al-Hilal. He also suffered a hamstring injury during this time.
Neymar Jr. only scored one goal in an AFC Champions League group stage match against Nassaji Mazandaran on October 3, 2023 for Al-Hilal. While he has endured multiple injuries and has not been seen on the pitch as much as fans would want, he is still considered to be one of the biggest names in the sport. It remains to be seen where he goes next.
Al Hilal and Neymar Jr. have agreed to terminate the player’s contract by mutual consent.
