The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser announces new solo album, New York residency

The Walkmen's Hamilton Leithauser announces new solo album, New York residency

Hamilton Leithauser, the frontman of The Walkmen, has a brand new solo album on the way. Titled This Side of the Island, the new set of songs arrives March 7th via Glassnote Records. Leithauser also announced his seventh annual residency at New York City’s Café Carlyle and shared the single “Knockin’ Heart.” See all of his upcoming dates and watch the “Knockin’ Heart” music video below.

Marking a slight shift away from the more low-key folk-rock that defined his previous solo endeavors, Leithauser crafted This Side of the Island over the course of eight years in his home studio, as well as Aaron Dessner (of The National)’s Long Pond Studio. Dessner served as a producer for the album, as did Leithauser’s wife Anna Stumpf.

To celebrate the release of This Side of the Island, Leithauser will perform a 15-show residency at Café Carlyle from March 6th through March 19th. The run marks his longest Carlyle residency yet, and its first night will serve as a special release show. Tickets are available via Tock. See the full list of Leithauser’s 2025 tour dates below.

“Knockin’ Heart,” the second single from the upcoming LP, showcases Leithauser’s newfound interest in groove and energy. A rocker with loud drums, a whopping three bass parts, and a howling chorus, it’s sure to appeal to fans of both Leithauser’s solo material and that of The Walkmen.

“‘Knockin’ Heart’ is sung by an estranged, stoned lover on their way home, who is dying to get a message through to someone who is probably not listening,” he said of the tune. “It was the last song I played for Aaron when we got together, and the first song he helped me work on. I’d say he raised the ceiling and lowered the floor on the entire thing sonically. He actually used a funny bass technique he said he’d used on a Taylor Swift song, which I got a kick out of.”

Leithauser’s most recent solo efforts include 2020’s The Loves of Your Life and 2016’s I Had a Dream that You Were Mine.
