Universal Pictures officially confirmed that Christopher Nolan‘s new film will be an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, The Odyssey.
The studio took to X to reveal that the upcoming project “is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology.” They continued, “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”
Nolan’s The Odyssey will feature a star-studded cast that currently includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. Production is set to begin some time in the first half of 2025, with the filmmaker writing and co-producing alongside Emma Thomas.
The Odyssey was composed around the 8th or 7th century BC and follows the story of Greek hero Odysseus who makes his journey home after spending 10 years away fighting the Trojan War. His return home to Ithaca from Troy takes him another 10 years and proves to be a difficult one.
