Mercedes-Benz has announced a significant update to its MBUX Voice Assistant, introducing an AI-driven knowledge feature that delivers real-time, natural language responses. This innovation uses Microsoft’s ChatGPT technology via the Azure OpenAI Service and integrates Bing search capabilities, enabling customers to have “human-like conversations” with their vehicles.
The enhanced assistant can answer a range of general knowledge questions spanning topics like pop culture, science and history. It also supports context-aware follow-up inquiries, making interactions seamless and intuitive. For example, a user might ask, “How many Grammy awards has a certain artist won?” and follow up with, “When was the first?” — all without needing to restate the topic.
“By adding an AI-driven knowledge feature to our MBUX Voice Assistant, we are making it even easier for customers to connect with their vehicle in an entertaining and rewarding way,” shared Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz’s Chief Technology Officer.
The update, available as of today, is being rolled out to over three million vehicles worldwide equipped with the MBUX infotainment system. Initially offered in German, British English and American English, the feature can be activated with a simple “Hey Mercedes” or via the steering wheel speech button.
In terms of data privacy, Mercedes-Benz states that all voice data is anonymized and processed within the secure Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. A risk assessment tool has also been implemented to prevent harmful or inappropriate responses.
