A$AP Rocky is officially joining the cast of Highest 2 Lowest, Spike Lee‘s upcoming film that he’s described as a “reinterpretation” of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low.
Previous reports claimed that Rocky will be playing the role of Yung Felon, and while there’s no confirmation of the effects of his role in the plot, the filmmaker shared via Deadline that the artist has “the main role.” Lee also shared that Ice Spice will appear in the movie, although the extent of her involvement was not revealed.
Highest 2 Lowest is inspired by Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller and stars Denzel Washington step into the lead role. “In Kurosawa’s film, Toshiro Mifune is a shoemaker,” he said. “In our film Denzel Washington is a music mogul with his own label and his reputation as the best ears in the business. So, this is the fifth film with the dynamic duo,” he continued, referring to himself and Washington as they prepare to execute their fifth collaboration.
Kurosawa’s High and Low is loosely based on Ed McBain/Evan Hunter’s 1959 novel, King’s Ransom. The Japanese crime film follows a company executive who becomes a victim of extortion when his employee’s son is kidnapped for ransom. It starred Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai.
Highest 2 Lowest will be released by A24 theatrically before its global launch on Apple TV+.
