Mika Tajima Opens ‘Penumbra’ Exhibition at Pace Hong Kong

Multidisciplinary artist Mika Tajima has unveiled her first solo exhibition at Pace’s Hong Kong gallery. Entitled Penumbra, the exhibit spotlights four distinct bodies of work that showcase her multidisciplinary practice.

Tajima’s art, recognized for its scientific and philosophical depth, explores themes of identity and agency in a technology-driven world. Her investigations delve into how digital and aesthetic technologies intertwine to create material, perceptual and psychic experiences.

The title, Penumbra, reflects the transitional space between shadow and light, symbolizing the nuanced interplay of perception and freedom. Highlights include ambient paintings from the “Art d’Ameublement” series, which utilize airborne paint pigments to create vibrant gradients on transparent acrylic shells, inviting viewers into their reflective depths.

Additionally, Tajima’s “Negative Entropy” textiles transform auditory brain activity and dynamic audio recordings into visual spectrograms, exploring the translation of ephemeral energy into material form. The exhibition also includes glass “Anima” sculptures and rose quartz “Pranayama” sculptures, which incorporate elements inspired by traditional acupuncture techniques and energy healing.

Mika Tajima’s Penumbra solo exhibition is currently on view at Pace’s Hong Kong gallery until December 21, 2024.
